Fugro, a global leader in geo-data services, has reached a groundbreaking milestone in the Middle East region by successfully executing the site survey and inspection of an offshore gas platform in UAE waters without deploying personnel offshore. Leveraging their advanced Blue Essence® technology, the entire operation was managed remotely from an onshore Remote Operations Centre (ROC).

Earlier this year, Fugro made history by commissioning the first government-licensed Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) in the region. In June, the Fugro Pegasus USV, a part of the Blue Essence fleet, was deployed to conduct a subsea survey and inspection of the UAQ3 platform located within the Umm Al Quwain gas field for Chinese operator Atlantis.

This remarkable operation was orchestrated from Fugro's onshore ROC in Dubai, staffed by a specialized team of mariners and surveyors. Equipped with a Blue Volta® electric remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the Fugro Pegasus USV meticulously inspected the platform's structural integrity and generated detailed seabed maps. Real-time data streaming to the ROC allowed Atlantis to actively review the findings during the operation, facilitating prompt identification of areas requiring further attention and comprehensive risk assessment for the forthcoming decommissioning program.

The Blue Essence USV fleet is an integral part of Fugro's commitment to delivering industry-leading geo-data insights with enhanced efficiency, safety, and sustainability. These USVs significantly reduce carbon emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional vessels, thanks to their economical design and optimized fuel systems. Their ability to operate at sea for up to two weeks without refueling contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable marine environment. Moreover, remote operations markedly diminish offshore health and safety risks and open doors to building a more localized and diverse onshore workforce.

Patrick Boyce, Drilling Manager at Atlantis (UAQ) Ltd, expressed satisfaction with Fugro's remote survey technology, emphasizing its alignment with project goals and its efficient completion of work. The operation was executed in just 40% of the allotted time frame despite challenging sea conditions, thanks to the technical team at Fugro's impressive ROC.

Hannes Swiegers, Fugro’s Director of IRM Services & Remote Operations for the Middle East and India, hailed this achievement as a significant milestone. He highlighted the role of innovative technologies in enhancing long-term safety, sustainability, and in-country value (ICV) for clients. Swiegers stressed that this new era of remote and autonomous technology will redefine offshore operations in the energy sector, contributing to a safer and more sustainable future.
