Fraunhofer IZFP has introduced its latest innovation, the Phased Array Semi-Automated Wheelset Inspection System (PASAWIS), at InnoTrans 2024. The system, designed to provide comprehensive manual inspections of railway wheelsets, uses three hand-held scanners to inspect the shaft, rim, and tread. Built for mobility and efficiency, PASAWIS can be operated by a single person and is capable of performing complete inspections in production settings. It meets the stringent VPI-EMG 09 requirements set by VPI European Rail Service GmbH (VERS) for the maintenance of freight cars through nondestructive testing.

One of the standout features of PASAWIS is its ability to store complete inspection data, ensuring long-term traceability. This mobile system allows for the transfer of data to centralized storage systems or cloud-based document management platforms, all in the standardized DICONDE format. The stored data includes key inspection parameters like inspector details, inspection date, signal amplification, and more. This feature enables seamless access and retrieval of data for future reference, enhancing compliance and safety standards in railway operations.

The system also generates individualized inspection reports that provide a visual and metadata-rich account of the inspection process, including A-scan, sector images, and C-scan results. The reports are secured with a digital signature, ensuring the integrity of the data and making the inspection process more efficient and reliable.

Developed in collaboration with Evident GmbH and Railmaint GmbH, PASAWIS is expected to bring a new level of safety and efficiency to railway maintenance operations. Fraunhofer IZFP’s innovation demonstrates its ongoing commitment to enhancing industrial safety through advanced technology, offering a robust solution for railway operators.

Fraunhofer IZFP continues to lead in applied research and development, focusing on intelligent sensor systems and data solutions that address the needs of various industries, particularly in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.
