Sonaspection, a leader in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) solutions, has created a bespoke training program to address critical challenges in the North American nuclear sector. Commissioned by a major industry player, Sonaspection developed three custom-engineered nozzle specimens that simulate realistic flaw scenarios, helping operators detect and size defects like cracks with precision.
The project required specialized engineering: two nozzles, each 1.3 meters in length, weighed 1.4 tons and had a thickness of 63.5 mm, while the third measured 1.5 meters, weighed 1.7 tons, and featured an 89 mm thickness. Sonaspection’s team coordinated across planning, quality assurance, inspection, and welding to complete these complex specimens, enhancing the training and performance validation essential for operational safety.
Importance of NDE Training and Operator Validation
In the nuclear industry, where safety standards are rigorous, effective operator validation and training are crucial. Sonaspection’s tailored solution ensures operators gain realistic, hands-on experience, enhancing their skills in identifying and addressing flaws under real-world conditions.
The NDE training bolsters regulatory compliance and risk mitigation, equipping operators to minimize potential risks. The program also contributes to operational efficiency and provides insights to further refine training protocols, a key step in supporting a skilled, qualified workforce in nuclear facilities.
