The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) Youngstown campus continues to play a pivotal role in addressing the nationwide shortage of skilled aircraft maintenance technicians, offering specialized training that includes non-destructive testing (NDT) - a vital skill set in modern aviation safety and maintenance.
Located just seven miles north of Youngstown, Ohio, at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, the branch campus immerses students in comprehensive, hands-on training that spans aircraft propulsion systems, electricity, sheet metal, hydraulics, instruments and controls, composite materials, non-destructive testing, and painting. The inclusion of NDT techniques, such as ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant inspection, equips students with critical capabilities to detect material flaws and ensure structural integrity without causing damage.
Ohio’s rich aviation heritage, coupled with the state’s growing demand for qualified technicians, positions PIA Youngstown as a key contributor to the region’s aerospace workforce. The campus’s commitment to high standards of education was recognized nationally when it earned the “School of Excellence” distinction from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) for the 2022–23 academic year.
Graduates of PIA’s Youngstown program qualify for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant certification, opening pathways to careers in aircraft maintenance, inspection, and repair across the aviation and aerospace sectors.
Through its blend of classroom instruction and hands-on NDT applications, PIA Youngstown continues to strengthen the technical foundation of future aviation professionals — ensuring aircraft safety, reliability, and performance for years to come.
