Iran has taken a significant step forward in industrial inspection technology as a leading domestic company successfully designs and manufactures advanced X-ray-based radiography systems for critical industrial applications, including pipeline inspection in refineries.
Paya Radiography Technology Company, an Iranian technology firm specialising in X-ray solutions, has developed a full range of radiography systems for medical, industrial, laboratory, and inspection use. The company’s technology is now being deployed to support non-destructive testing (NDT) needs across key sectors, marking a milestone in local innovation and self-reliance in industrial radiography.
According to Milad Badri Kooh, Quality Control Manager of Paya Radiography Technology Company, the firm’s core expertise lies in the design and production of X-ray generators and detectors for diverse applications. “We are producers of X-ray generators with varying power capacities, ranging from low power to high power, which are used in a variety of applications,” he explained.
Portable Radiography for Pipeline Inspection
One of the company’s most notable innovations is a portable radiography system designed specifically for pipeline inspection across refineries and industrial facilities. The system uses an X-ray generator to produce a uniform beam that passes through the pipeline, while a flat-panel detector captures high-resolution images to reveal internal defects such as cracks, corrosion, sedimentation, and blockages.
“Aside from pipeline inspection, this system is also used in quality control of welds and other non-destructive testing processes,” Badri Kooh added. “It is widely employed in industries, laboratories, and quality control units.”
Interdisciplinary Engineering and Local Manufacturing
The development of these systems integrates expertise in power electronics, software engineering, and mechanical design. “Multiple engineering teams collaborate simultaneously in the design and development processes of these products,” he said, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the technology.
While domestic manufacturers exist for X-ray generators, Paya Radiography Technology has achieved a first for Iran by producing the entire portable radiography system—including the generator, detector, and image processing software—locally. “Foreign competitors mainly come from the U.S. and Italy,” Badri Kooh added. “However, due to the recent entry into this field, we do not yet have any exports.”
Cabinet Radiography for Industrial Components
In addition to portable systems, the company has developed cabinet radiography systems for laboratory and industrial part inspection. These systems are used to evaluate components such as rings, steel parts, and aluminium castings, allowing manufacturers to detect internal defects like cracks, porosity, and structural inconsistencies without damaging the parts.
Explaining the system’s operation, Badri Kooh said: “The X-ray generator is positioned on one side, with the detector on the opposite side, and the workpiece is placed on a movable table between them. After passing through the part, the X-ray beam is captured by the detector, and the final image is processed. Any internal defects are clearly visible in the image.”
The cabinet system is also designed with enhanced safety features. “The unit is fully shielded with lead, ensuring that operators can use the system without concern for radiation exposure,” he noted.
Strengthening Industrial Inspection Capabilities
The developments by Paya Radiography Technology underscore the growing capabilities of Iranian companies in high-precision industrial inspection and non-destructive testing. As demand for advanced NDT solutions rises across energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors, locally developed radiography systems are expected to play an increasingly important role in ensuring safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
