Waygate Technologies, a leader in non-destructive testing (NDT), has launched its new fully automated ultrasonic wheelset testing system, the Krautkrämer WheelStar RPS. This robotic solution is designed to enhance safety and efficiency in the railway industry by significantly reducing the time and cost associated with mandatory wheelset inspections.

The WheelStar RPS utilizes a robotic assembly to precisely position ultrasonic mechanics on the wheelsets. In a fully automated process, an underfloor unit rotates the wheel while a compact phased array matrix probe facilitates the inspection. The system then automatically compares the results with calibration data to ensure accuracy.

A key feature of the WheelStar RPS is its remarkable speed. With a cycle time of just six minutes per wheelset, the system performs checks and re-checks automatically, eliminating the need for manual intervention and the handling of reference wheelsets. This not only optimizes defect detection across various wheel geometries and wear conditions but also minimizes false indications, leading to a substantial reduction in avoidable costs.

By providing a simple, automated workflow, the WheelStar RPS also helps to address the industry-wide shortage of highly trained inspection personnel. The system's design ensures precise and reliable inspections, making it a critical tool for maintaining the integrity and safety of railway operations. The launch of this advanced system reinforces Waygate Technologies' commitment to providing innovative NDT solutions that meet the evolving demands of the global rail industry.
