Position Summary:
The Tank NDT Technician is responsible for conducting non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections of storage tanks, structures, pipelines, and other components using various inspection methods, including radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, magnetic flux leakage (MFL), and other applicable techniques. The technician ensures inspections are performed in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and company procedures while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and accurate documentation. The role also includes supporting team members, maintaining equipment, and ensuring customer satisfaction through professional service.
Responsibilities:
- Perform non-destructive testing of structures, pipelines, storage tanks, and other components in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and procedures.
- Conduct inspections using gamma radiography, X-ray radiography, ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), magnetic flux leakage (MFL), leak testing, and visual inspection methods.
- Select, prepare, load, calibrate, and operate NDT equipment required for inspection activities.
- Identify defects and discontinuities using appropriate NDT techniques.
- Complete work orders, inspection documentation, and reports accurately within required timeframes.
- Drive company vehicles while maintaining a safe driving record.
- Provide instruction to assigned assistants and promote safe work practices.
- Perform general cleaning and minor maintenance of company vehicles and inspection equipment.
- Routinely inspect equipment and maintain clean, organized, and functional work areas.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Work Experience:
- Demonstrated NDT skill, knowledge, or experience.
Certifications & Licenses:
- Valid driver's license.
- Must be insurable through PROtect, LLC insurance carrier.
- Certification in Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT).
- Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) certification is required.
- Vacuum Box certification is considered an advantage.
- TWIC card preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Expertise in multiple NDT methods and willingness to continue developing technical skills.
- Intermediate mechanical knowledge.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety regulations and procedures.
- Ability to work demanding and flexible schedules, including extended workdays, short-notice call-outs, and extended travel assignments.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to provide guidance to assistants.
- Professional customer service skills.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including confined spaces, elevated work areas, uneven terrain, and extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 150 pounds with assistance.
Requirements:
- Ability to work long shifts of up to 16 hours when required.
- Ability to travel for extended periods and respond to emergency call-outs on short notice.
- Ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Must meet applicable weight restrictions for the safe use of fall protection equipment and safety harnesses.
- Ability to work around moving mechanical equipment, electrical components, chemicals, and other industrial hazards.
