WGI, Inc. (WGI), a nationally recognized design and professional services firm, has announced that SDR Engineering, Inc. (SDR), a transportation engineering company specializing in structural and bridge engineering, infrastructure rehabilitation, bridge inspection, and non-destructive testing (NDT), has joined the organization.
The addition of SDR Engineering strengthens WGI’s capabilities across structural engineering, bridge diagnostics, infrastructure rehabilitation, and advanced inspection services, further enhancing its ability to serve transportation and infrastructure clients throughout the Southern United States.
Founded in 1992 by Dr. Mohsen Shahawy, SDR Engineering has established a strong reputation for addressing complex infrastructure challenges through innovative engineering solutions. Operating from offices in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Tallahassee, Florida, the company brings decades of expertise in bridge design, inspection, condition assessment, and structural evaluation.
For the NDT and infrastructure inspection sector, the integration expands WGI’s technical depth in bridge inspection, structural diagnostics, and long-term asset management. SDR’s experience includes inspections, condition assessments, and load ratings on more than 43 miles of segmental concrete bridges, over 800 concrete bridges, and more than 140 steel bridges, alongside numerous major infrastructure projects across the United States.
“We are excited to welcome the team from SDR Engineering to WGI,” said WGI CEO, David Wantman. “SDR's reputation for technical excellence in structural and bridge engineering, particularly in complex analysis, rehabilitation, and advanced materials, perfectly complements WGI's multidisciplinary platform. Dr. Shahawy and his team have built an exceptional organization with a proven track record of delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions for critical infrastructure,” he added. “Their expertise in diagnostics, load testing, and structural rehabilitation will significantly enhance our ability to serve clients facing increasingly complex infrastructure challenges.”
SDR is also recognized for its use of advanced engineering methodologies, including finite element analysis, soil-structure interaction modeling, structural health monitoring, and the application of advanced composite materials such as FRP and CFRP for infrastructure repair and strengthening. Senior members of the firm have also contributed to national and international code development related to these technologies.
The move aligns with WGI’s broader growth strategy while expanding its multidisciplinary engineering and inspection services portfolio. By integrating SDR’s expertise, the company aims to deliver more comprehensive solutions for aging infrastructure, with a focus on safety, reliability, and long-term performance.
“Joining WGI marks an exciting new chapter for SDR Engineering,” said Dr. Mohsen Shahawy, CEO of SDR. “This partnership allows us to expand our impact by leveraging WGI's extensive resources and multidisciplinary expertise, while continuing to deliver the high-quality, innovative structural solutions our clients have come to expect. Our shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and client service makes this a natural fit,” he added. “Together, we are well-positioned to address the growing demands of aging infrastructure and to deliver resilient, forward-thinking solutions for the communities we serve.”
The addition of SDR Engineering further strengthens WGI’s position in infrastructure diagnostics, bridge inspection, materials engineering, and non-destructive testing, supporting the growing need for data-driven solutions that extend the service life of critical infrastructure assets while improving operational safety and performance.
