Baker Hughes, a renowned energy technology company, has revealed an extensive eight-year partnership with Shell Energy Italia, signaling a robust commitment to environmental responsibility. The agreement revolves around a power purchase agreement (PPA) that will provide renewable energy to seven of Baker Hughes' Italian facilities, all belonging to the Industrial and Energy Technology (IET) sector. This green energy will be harnessed from Shell's forthcoming solar photovoltaic farm in southern Italy's Apulia region.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to enact a substantial reduction of 6.8 Kilotonnes (Kton) of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) annually across the aforementioned sites, translating into a remarkable 13% decrease in emissions. To put this into perspective, this achievement is akin to taking 1,200 light-duty gasoline cars off the road each year.

This groundbreaking announcement follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked in 2021, highlighting the strong synergy between the two entities. Their mutual focus lies in developing technological solutions that aid in the decarbonization of both the energy and industrial sectors.

Davide Mariani, the Vice President of Operations, Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of this venture, stating, "Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone both in Italy and globally. We’re working together with Shell to invest in vital renewable energy projects that will support both the decarbonization of our manufacturing facilities and create a cleaner, more sustainable energy system for the country. This agreement sets us on the right path to achieving our commitment to reduce our CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Gianluca Formenti, the CEO of Shell Energy Italia, expressed their commitment to green energy solutions, saying, "Shell Energy Italia is a major energy supplier, capable of responding to market demands by offering advanced energy commodity management solutions to over 700 major industrial customers. The supply contract signed with Baker Hughes for the Zamboni plant is a tangible confirmation of our ability to create a direct link between our production and demand for energy from renewable sources positioning us as an integrated energy company."

This partnership is deeply rooted in sustainability, with various measures in place to protect and enhance local biodiversity around the solar plant site. Initiatives include the restoration of previously uncultivated land, the creation of structures to support native plant species and nesting birds, and soil quality improvement.

This PPA complements a prior 2019 agreement by Baker Hughes to power its Texas facilities with renewable energy, further cementing its commitment to green energy. Other on-site renewable solutions, such as solar installations across multiple Italian sites, are also in motion.

Baker Hughes' 2022 corporate sustainability report showcased an impressive 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its operating facilities (Scope 1 and 2) due to energy efficiency initiatives, placing the company on a trajectory to fulfill its net-zero emissions pledge by 2050.
