Visual Testing - Level III

Course title

Overview

Visual Testing (VT) is a fundamental nondestructive testing method that encompasses both direct and indirect visual inspection techniques. Direct inspection involves the visual examination of materials using the human eye without additional aids, while indirect inspection may involve the use of tools such as magnifying glasses, mirrors, borescopes, or closed-circuit TV systems. Visual inspection plays a crucial role in identifying visible defects, problem areas, and anomalies, making it an essential technique in the NDT industry.

What will I learn

Visual Testing - Level III

Visual Testing (VT) is a fundamental nondestructive testing method that encompasses both direct and indirect visual inspection techniques. Direct inspection involves the visual examination of materials using the human eye without additional aids, while indirect inspection may involve the use of tools such as magnifying glasses, mirrors, borescopes, or closed-circuit TV systems. Visual inspection plays a crucial role in identifying visible defects, problem areas, and anomalies, making it an essential technique in the NDT industry. A thorough visual examination of operational plants can reveal obvious problem areas, such as leaks, excess vibration, corrosion, or misalignment, providing valuable insights for further NDT applications.

Course Content:

The Visual Testing Level III course builds upon the knowledge gained in Levels I and II. The course content includes:

  • PCN requirements for Level III approval
  • Complementary NDT Methods and their integration with Visual Testing
  • Quality assurance, quality control, and supervision principles
  • Specifications, procedures, and techniques specific to Visual Testing
  • Analysis of Visual Testing reports and interpretation of results
  • Advanced Visual Testing Theory and Revision
  • Analysis and review of Visual Testing procedures
  • Procedure writing and development
  • Mock examinations to reinforce learning and assess competency

Responsibilities of Certified Level III:

  • An individual certified to Visual Testing Level III has demonstrated competence to perform and direct Visual Testing operators. Visual Testing Level III personnel have demonstrated:
  • Competence in evaluating and interpreting results according to existing standards, codes, and specifications
  • Sufficient practical knowledge of materials, fabrication, processes, and product technology to select appropriate Visual Testing methods and establish effective inspection techniques
  • A general familiarity with other NDT methods and their integration with Visual Testing

Within the defined scope of their competence, Visual Testing Level III personnel may be authorized to:

  • Assume full responsibility for a test facility or examination center, including oversight of staff
  • Establish, review, and validate Visual Testing instructions and procedures for accuracy and technical correctness
  • Interpret codes, standards, specifications, and procedures relevant to Visual Testing
  • Designate specific Visual Testing methods, techniques, and procedures to be used
  • Perform all tasks at all levels within the defined scope and limitations of their certification
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Visual Testing personnel at all levels
  • Conduct, manage, and supervise PCN qualification examinations on behalf of the British Institute of NDT (BINDT)
  • BINDT strongly recommends that Level III personnel maintain Level II certification in the applicable methods and sectors when their duties involve routine NDT within a specific product or industry sector. This ensures comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the field.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • The duration of Visual Testing Level III training depends on the candidate's experience and qualification after passing the PCN Basic Exam. Please contact us for specific details regarding training hours and examination requirements.
  • Achieving full PCN certification in Visual Testing requires acquiring sufficient experience following the completion of the required training hours and successfully passing the examination. Please reach out to us for more information regarding the certification process.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To attain PCN Level III certification in Visual Testing, candidates must have a minimum of 24 months of supervised work experience in VT. These work experience requirements ensure that Level III practitioners possess extensive practical exposure and hands-on experience in performing visual inspections in real-world scenarios. Please contact us for confirmation of work experience requirements.
  • Note: Visual Testing Level III certification represents the highest level of competence in the field. Level III personnel are qualified to perform, direct, and oversee Visual Testing operations, evaluate results, and provide guidance to personnel at all levels. This course expands upon the foundational concepts covered in Levels I and II and equips inspectors with the necessary expertise to handle complex inspection tasks and ensure adherence to industry standards and codes.
