Are you interested in becoming a skilled Radiographic Testing professional? If so, our Radiographic Testing Training (NDT20) course may be perfect for you. This course is specifically designed for NDT personnel, engineers, surveyors, inspectors, and quality engineers who want to expand their knowledge and skills in Radiographic Testing.

Our training is held at TWI Cambridge and is also available to those working in the aerospace industry. The course covers practical, inspection and theoretical aspects as appropriate and is in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712. The training concludes with a certification examination.

What Will You Learn?

Our Radiographic Testing Training course provides comprehensive coverage of topics, including welding processes and weld defects, properties of X- and gamma-rays, sensitometry, film selection, film processing, spurious indications, factors controlling contrast and definition, X- and gamma-ray equipment, ionising radiation hazards, regulations, use of screens and filters, selection of angle of aspect, image quality indicators, defect depth location, castings, and reporting.

By the end of the course, you will gain practical knowledge and skills in:

Selecting film types and energy levels, as well as preparing techniques for a given specimen

Understanding the theory of film processing and conducting practical dark-room work

Demonstrating basic knowledge of radiation safety (see note in Additional Information)

Plotting and evaluating film characteristics (sensitometry)

Recognizing film faults

Meeting the syllabus requirements for CSWIP, PCN Level 2.

Please note that the course does not cover PCN Level 2 Safety Endorsement (Radiation Protection Supervisor).

What Will You Leave With?

By the end of the Radiographic Testing Training course, you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Explain the basic theory of X - and gamma radiography
  • Understand and select film type and energy levels, as well as select and prepare techniques for a given specimen
  • Understand the theory of film processing and carry out practical dark-room work
  • Have a working knowledge of basic radiation safety (see note in Additional Information)
  • Plot and evaluate film characteristics (sensitometry)
  • Recognize film faults
  • Meet the syllabus requirements for CSWIP, PCN Level 2.

Price and Certification

The price listed for direct access Level 2 includes examination and levy fees. For Level 1 options, please contact Customer Services.

Please note that all candidates attending a PCN examination (initial, retest, or renewal) must provide photo ID (e.g., driving license number, passport number, PCN ID card) on the day of sitting the examination. Failure to do so will result in the candidate being turned away.

PCN Radiography certificates are only valid so long as you hold any other level of PCN radiation protection certification, or valid radiation safety certification recognized by the British Institute of NDT.

Entry Requirements

There are no mandatory course entry requirements. However, TWI Training and Examination Services requires all students wishing to attend the Radiographic Testing training (NDT20) to hold a Basic Radiographic Safety qualification before they can be allowed onto the course.

Training Requirements

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

  • Level 1 - 40 hours
  • Level 2 - 80 hours (Direct Level 2 - 120 hours)

The training hours requirement is fulfilled when candidates attend one of TWI's training courses.

Certification Requirements

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

  • Level 1 - 3 months
  • Level 2 - 9 months (Direct Level 2 - 12 months)
