Radiographic Interpretation of Welds Online Live Course

Course title

What will I learn

Course Description :

This comprehensive course is designed for radiographers, inspectors, engineers, and surveyors who wish to interpret radiographs but do not have a solid understanding of the principles of radiography. The aim is to provide personnel responsible for judging the quality of radiographs with essential knowledge on radiographic theory and practice to enable them to make informed decisions regarding the identity and extent of the defects revealed.

TWI Training understands the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and is offering online live courses, so that you can continue to improve your knowledge and expertise, wherever you are. The course content remains the same as the classroom-based course, and you will be able to attend the 4-day theory training sessions via Zoom or similar platforms, delivered by TWI Training Lecturers. The delivery of the practical aspects will be 3 days of classroom training followed by a 1-day examination.

What will I learn?

This course is based on real cases from industrial practice and is designed to meet the requirements of EN ISO 9712. Candidates work to real radiographic interpretation specifications based on acceptance criteria. The course includes a minimum necessary theoretical background followed by a number of exercises that help candidates gain confidence when working with standards and procedures and assure the correct approach and assessment to acceptance criteria.

The most crucial part of the training is spent on interpretation exercises, where each student is assigned a comprehensive set of radiographs. The difficulty level of assigned tasks is gradually increased so that students progress from basic to advanced interpretation levels. During each interpretation session, all students are assigned the same task but carry out interpretation independently from the rest of the group under the guidance of an experienced tutor.

Radiographic interpretation is followed by sets of multiple-choice questions focused on key areas of radiography. These questions provide additional valuable guidance to the student. Each session is closed by an open discussion on the correct answers and reporting. This open discussion environment provides additional learning outcomes – students may discuss their approach to a particular task and learn from other group members.

The course ends with an examination based on multiple-choice questions and written reports, depending on the level of certification sought.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand the origin and nature of defects
  • Gain confidence when working with standards and procedures
  • Understand basic rules of exposure set-up based upon material type under test
  • Gain confidence when determining if the radiograph was produced correctly
  • Get familiar with the scope of the radiographic interpreter task
  • Gain confidence when determining if radiographic quality is acceptable
  • Be able to use acceptance criteria correctly
  • Gain experience of the workflow, which is common under industrial conditions
  • Meet the syllabus of CSWIP and PCN Level 2.
