Magnetic Particle Testing - Level III

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a widely used nondestructive testing method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. This method involves magnetizing the component under inspection and applying ferromagnetic particles to the magnetized surface. The particles are attracted to areas of flux leakage, indicating the presence of defects. MT is commonly employed for testing welds, castings, and forgings.

Course Content:

The Magnetic Particle Testing Level III course is designed for individuals who have already achieved Level II certification and wish to advance their skills and knowledge in MT inspections. The course content includes:

  • PCN requirements for Level III approval
  • Complementary nondestructive testing methods
  • Quality assurance, quality control, and supervision
  • Specifications, procedures, and techniques in MT
  • Analysis of Magnetic Particle Testing Reports
  • Advanced Magnetic Particle Testing Theory and Revision
  • Analysis and review of procedures
  • Procedure writing and development
  • Mock examinations to assess proficiency

Responsibilities of Certified Level III:

An individual certified in Magnetic Particle Testing Level III has demonstrated exceptional competence to perform and direct Magnetic Particle Testing operations. Level III personnel possess in-depth knowledge and expertise in MT inspections and have proven their ability to:

  • Evaluate and interpret results by existing standards, codes, and specifications
  • Apply practical knowledge of materials, fabrication, processes, and product technology to select appropriate MT methods and establish effective inspection techniques
  • Assist in establishing acceptance criteria where none are available, ensuring adherence to industry standards
  • Demonstrate familiarity with other nondestructive testing methods
  • Assume full responsibility for a test facility or examination center, including supervision of staff
  • Establish, review, and validate Magnetic Particle Testing instructions and procedures for technical correctness
  • Interpret codes, standards, specifications, and procedures related to MT inspections
  • Designate specific Magnetic Particle testing methods, techniques, and procedures for implementation
  • Perform all tasks at all levels within the defined scope and limitations of their certification
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Magnetic Particle Testing personnel at all levels
  • Conduct, manage, and supervise PCN qualification examinations on behalf of the British Institute of NDT (BINDT)
  • It is strongly recommended that Level III personnel hold and maintain Level II certification in the applicable methods and industry sectors when applying routine NDT within specific products or industry sectors.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • The duration of Magnetic Particle Testing Level III training depends on the candidate's experience and successful completion of the PCN Basic Exam. Please contact us for more details regarding training hours and examination requirements to achieve full PCN certification.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To obtain PCN Level III certification in Magnetic Particle Testing, candidates must have a minimum of 24 months of supervised work experience in MT. This work experience ensures that Level III practitioners have extensive practical exposure and expertise in performing and directing MT inspections in various real-world scenarios. Please contact us for confirmation of work experience requirements.
  • Note: Magnetic Particle Testing Level III certification represents the highest level of competence in MT inspections. Level III practitioners possess advanced knowledge, experience, and leadership skills, enabling them to lead and manage NDT operations effectively. They play a crucial role in maintaining quality and safety standards within the industry.
