Overview

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a widely used nondestructive testing method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. This method involves magnetizing the component under inspection and applying ferromagnetic particles to the magnetized surface.

What will I learn

Magnetic Particle Testing - Level II

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a widely used nondestructive testing method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. This method involves magnetizing the component under inspection and applying ferromagnetic particles to the magnetized surface. The particles are attracted to areas of flux leakage, indicating the presence of defects. MT is commonly employed for testing welds, castings, and forgings.

Course Content:

The Magnetic Particle Testing Level II course builds upon the foundational knowledge gained at Level I and focuses on developing advanced skills and competencies in MT inspections. The course content includes:

  • Properties of magnetic fields
  • Principles of magnetic particle inspection
  • Magnetic particle inspection equipment
  • Equipment calibration
  • Defect detection and evaluation
  • Magnetic particle inspection techniques
  • Production of written techniques
  • Relevant standards and industry requirements
  • PCN documentation
  • Product technology
  • Extensive practical exercises

Responsibilities of Certified Level II:

An individual certified to Magnetic Particle Testing Level II has demonstrated competence to perform NDT inspections according to established procedures. Level II personnel, within the defined scope of their certification, may be authorized by the employer to:

  • Select the appropriate Magnetic Particle Testing technique for the specific test method
  • Define the limitations of the application for the chosen testing method
  • Translate Magnetic Particle Testing codes, standards, specifications, and procedures into instructions tailored to the actual working conditions
  • Set up and verify equipment settings for Magnetic Particle Testing
  • Perform and supervise Magnetic Particle tests
  • Interpret and evaluate results by applicable standards, codes, specifications, or procedures
  • Prepare comprehensive written instructions for Magnetic Particle Testing
  • Carry out and oversee all tasks at or below Level II
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to personnel at or below Level II
  • Report the results of Magnetic Particle tests accurately and effectively
  • Training & Exam Duration:

Magnetic Particle Testing - Level II training is available in two options:

  • PCN MT L2 (for candidates who already hold Level I certification): 24 hours of training
  • PCN MT L2 (for candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I certificate): 40 hours of training
  • Additionally, 24-hour SNT-TC-1A training is recommended to enhance the understanding of industry practices and standards in Magnetic Particle Testing.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To qualify for PCN Level II certification in MT, candidates must have a minimum of 3 months of supervised work experience in magnetic particle testing for those who hold Level I certification or 4 months of supervised work experience for candidates seeking direct Level II certification without a prior Level I certificate. This work experience ensures that Level II practitioners have practical exposure and competence in performing MT inspections in real-world scenarios under the guidance of experienced personnel.
  • Note: Magnetic Particle Testing Level II certification demonstrates an advanced level of competence in MT inspections and enables individuals to independently perform and supervise NDT inspections by established procedures. It opens doors to opportunities for career advancement and specialization within the field of nondestructive testing.
