Magnetic Particle Testing - Level I

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a widely used nondestructive testing method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. This method involves magnetizing the component under inspection and applying ferromagnetic particles to the magnetized surface. The particles are attracted to areas of flux leakage, indicating the presence of defects. MT is commonly employed for testing welds, castings, and forgings.

Course Content:

The Magnetic Particle Testing Level I course provides foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for performing MT inspections. The course content includes:

  • Magnetic particle testing terminology
  • Properties of magnetic fields
  • Principles of magnetic particle inspection
  • Magnetic particle inspection equipment
  • Equipment calibration
  • Defect detection and evaluation
  • Magnetic particle inspection techniques
  • Relevant standards and health & safety considerations
  • PCN documentation
  • Product Technology
  • Extensive practical exercises

Responsibilities of Certified Level I:

An individual certified in Magnetic Particle Testing Level I have demonstrated competence to carry out MT inspections according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level II or Level III personnel. Level I personnel, within the defined scope of their certification, may be authorized by the employer to perform the following tasks by MT instructions:

  • Set up Magnetic Particle Testing Equipment
  • Perform Magnetic Particle Testing inspections
  • Record and classify results of the tests according to written criteria
  • Report the results of inspections
  • Level I certified personnel shall not be responsible for choosing the test method or technique to be used, nor for the interpretation of test results.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • Magnetic Particle Testing - Level I training typically involves 16 hours of instruction. Additionally, a 12-hour SNT-TC-1A training is recommended to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of MT.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To qualify for PCN Level I certification in MT, candidates must have a minimum of 1 month of supervised work experience in magnetic particle testing. This work experience requirement ensures that Level I practitioners gain practical exposure and familiarity with MT inspections under the guidance of experienced personnel.
  • Note: Magnetic Particle Testing Level I certification enables individuals to contribute to the effectiveness and reliability of MT inspections while working under the supervision of Level II or Level III personnel. It lays the foundation for further advancement in MT and provides a valuable skillset for professionals entering the field of nondestructive testing.
