What will I learn

Eddy Current Testing Level II

The Eddy Current Testing Level II course provides comprehensive training and qualification for individuals involved in surface and tube inspections using advanced Eddy current testing techniques. Following the SNT TC 1A Employer Written Practice, this course builds upon the foundational knowledge gained at Level I and equips participants with the skills required to perform complex eddy current inspections.

Eddy current testing involves the use of an AC current-carrying coil placed near the specimen surface or around the specimen. Flaws and material variations in the specimen affect the strength of the eddy currents, which are measured by electrical changes in the exciting coil. The course covers both voltage and phase measurements, with an emphasis on understanding the factors that affect coil impedance and signal-to-noise ratio.

The success of eddy current testing relies on effectively managing the variables that impact the strength of eddy currents, including electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, mass, homogeneity, test frequency, coupling, field strength, and test coil characteristics. The course delves into the selection of test frequency, coupling techniques, field strength considerations, and instrument design considerations for optimal results.

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of electromagnetic theory, eddy current theory, eddy current sensing probes, and methods to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The curriculum also covers topics such as test frequency selection, coupling techniques, field strength effects, and instrument design considerations.

Upon achieving Level II certification, individuals demonstrate competence in performing NDT inspections according to established procedures. Level II personnel have the authority to select the NDT technique for the test method, define limitations of application, translate codes and standards into NDT instructions, set up and verify equipment settings, perform and supervise tests, interpret and evaluate results, prepare written NDT instructions, carry out tasks at or below Level II, provide guidance to personnel at or below Level II, and report test results.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • The Eddy Current Testing Level II course requires a total training duration of 40 hours for candidates who already hold Level I certification. For candidates who want to pursue Level II directly without prior Level I certification, the training duration is 80 hours. The course is designed to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience to excel in advanced eddy current testing. Please note that specific training and examination schedules may vary depending on the training provider.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To attain NDT Level II certification in Eddy Current Testing (surface/tube), candidates must complete 400 hours of supervised work experience if they already hold Level I certification. For candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I certification, 1600 hours of supervised work experience are required. This work experience requirement complements the theoretical training, allowing individuals to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios and develop their proficiency in eddy current testing.
  • Note: The course description has been revamped based on the provided content. However, please note that specific details such as training hours, work experience requirements, and examination formats may vary based on the organization or certification body.
