Eddy current testing involves the use of an AC current-carrying coil placed near the specimen surface or around the specimen. The coil induces circulating eddy currents in the specimen, which in turn influence the current in the coil through mutual induction. Flaws and material variations in the specimen affect the strength of the eddy currents, which are measured by electrical changes in the exciting coil. The course covers both voltage and phase measurements, with an emphasis on the former in simpler instruments.

The effectiveness of eddy current testing depends on various factors, including the electrical conductivity of the specimen, magnetic permeability (for ferromagnetic specimens), stand-off distance between the coil and specimen, AC frequency used, and the dimensions of the coil and specimen. Separating the effects of these variables is crucial for successful inspections. Upon achieving Level I certification, individuals demonstrate competence in carrying out NDT inspections according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. The responsibilities of Level I certified personnel include setting up NDT equipment, performing tests, recording and classifying test results based on written criteria, and reporting the results. Level I personnel are not responsible for selecting the test method or interpreting the results.

Training & Exam Duration:
