What will I learn

Eddy Current Testing Level I

The Eddy Current Testing Level I course provides comprehensive training and qualification for individuals involved in surface and tube inspections using Eddy current testing techniques. Based on the SNT TC 1A Employer Written Practice, this course equips participants with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to perform effective eddy current inspections.

Eddy current testing involves the use of an AC current-carrying coil placed near the specimen surface or around the specimen. The coil induces circulating eddy currents in the specimen, which in turn influence the current in the coil through mutual induction. Flaws and material variations in the specimen affect the strength of the eddy currents, which are measured by electrical changes in the exciting coil. The course covers both voltage and phase measurements, with an emphasis on the former in simpler instruments.

The effectiveness of eddy current testing depends on various factors, including the electrical conductivity of the specimen, magnetic permeability (for ferromagnetic specimens), stand-off distance between the coil and specimen, AC frequency used, and the dimensions of the coil and specimen. Separating the effects of these variables is crucial for successful inspections. Most eddy current instruments require calibration on a set of test specimens, and the technique boasts high flaw sensitivity.

The course curriculum encompasses essential topics to develop a strong foundation in eddy current testing. Participants will gain knowledge in electrical properties, eddy current inspection equipment, equipment calibration, principles of magnetism, principles of electromagnetism, defect detection, and evaluation, eddy current techniques, report and instruction writing, and relevant standards. The training emphasizes hands-on experience to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop practical skills.

Upon achieving Level I certification, individuals demonstrate competence in carrying out NDT inspections according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. The responsibilities of Level I certified personnel include setting up NDT equipment, performing tests, recording and classifying test results based on written criteria, and reporting the results. Level I personnel are not responsible for selecting the test method or interpreting the results.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • The Eddy Current Testing Level I course requires a total training duration of 40 hours, as per the SNT-TC-1A requirements. This comprehensive training provides participants with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to excel in eddy current testing. Please note that specific training and examination schedules may vary depending on the training provider.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To attain NDT Level I certification in Eddy Current Testing (surface/tube), candidates must complete 400 hours of supervised work experience. This hands-on experience complements the theoretical training, allowing individuals to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios and enhance their proficiency in eddy current testing.
  • Note: The course description has been revamped based on the provided content. However, please note that specific details such as training hours, work experience requirements, and examination formats may vary based on the organization or certification body.
