Eddy Current Inspection of Ferritic Welds

Course title

What will I learn

If you are an NDT operative, inspector, or technician engaged in the in-service application of eddy current techniques and responsible for writing techniques and instructions for the inspection of ferritic welds, this course is designed for you.

What will I learn?

This one or two-week course will teach you about eddy current inspection of weldments and prepare you for the supporting PCN Level 1 and 2 examinations. Traditionally, surface crack detection in ferritic steel welds with eddy current techniques has been challenging due to changes in material properties in the heat-affected zone. However, modern probe design and construction combined with advanced electronic equipment have largely resolved these issues. As a result, you can now apply eddy current techniques to an in-service inspection of ferritic steel structures in the as-welded conditions without having to remove the protective coating. The course will cover the selection of suitable eddy current probes/coils, materials, coatings, and weld geometry caused by the weld profile.

The training is in line with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and ends with a certification examination.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the variables defined above and define the limitations of the examination
  • Write clear and concise inspection instructions and test reports
  • Meet the syllabus requirements of CSWIP/PCN Level 2
  • The course ends with the certification examination.

Entry requirements:

There are no mandatory course entry requirements.

The price listed for direct access Level 2 includes examination and levy fees. For Level 1 or training options, please contact Customer Services.

Please note:

All candidates attending a PCN examination (initial, retest, or renewal) must provide photo ID (e.g., driving license number, passport number, PCN ID card) on the day of sitting the examination. Failure to do so will result in the candidate being turned away.

Training requirements:

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

  • Level 1 - 40 hours
  • Level 2 - 40 hours (Direct Level 2 - 80 hours)
  • The training hours requirement is fulfilled when candidates attend one of TWI's training courses.

Certification requirements:

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

  • Level 1 - 3 months
  • Level 2 - 9 months (Direct Level 2 - 12 months)
  • Certification will not be issued until successful completion of the examination and the required experience is achieved.
