What will I learn

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) - Level II

The Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) Level II course, aligned with the SNT-TC-1A Employer Written Practice, is designed to provide in-depth training and qualification for individuals involved in non-contact electromagnetic inspections using the ACFM technique. ACFM is a powerful method capable of detecting and sizing defects, including cracks, in metals. It utilizes the measurement of magnetic field disturbances caused by the interaction between alternating currents and defects.

Building upon the foundation established in ACFM Level I, this course delves into advanced topics related to electromagnetic theory, eddy current theory, alternating current field measurement theory, and the various types of ACFM sensing probes. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of factors that affect depth of penetration, including conductivity, permeability, frequency, and coil size. They will also explore the factors influencing ACFM testing, such as residual fields, defect geometry, defect location, defect orientation, and the distance between adjacent defects.

The Techniques and Applications section of the course focuses on software commands and user standards and operating procedures specific to ACFM. Participants will learn how to optimize probe settings for different applications, including gain and frequency settings, current selection, sensitivity settings, and scalings. They will also become familiar with standards and operating procedures applicable to ACFM inspections.

Upon successful completion of the ACFM Level II course, individuals will demonstrate their competence to perform NDT according to established procedures. Level II certified personnel have the authority to select the appropriate NDT technique, define the limitations of its application, translate codes and standards into practical instructions, set up and verify equipment settings, conduct tests, interpret and evaluate results, prepare written NDT instructions, supervise personnel at or below Level II, and report non-destructive test findings.

Training Duration:

  • The ACFM Level II course requires a total training duration of either 40 hours (for candidates who have already attained Level I certification) or 80 hours (for candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I certification). The training is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in advanced ACFM techniques. Actual training schedules may vary depending on the training provider.

Work Experience Requirement:

  • To achieve NDT Level II certification in ACFM, candidates must accumulate supervised work experience totaling 630 hours (for candidates who have Level I certification) or 840 hours (for candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I certification). This work experience requirement allows individuals to gain practical expertise and apply their knowledge in real-world inspection scenarios.
  • Note: The course description has been revamped based on the provided content. However, please note that specific details such as training hours, work experience requirements, and examination formats may vary based on the organization or certification body.
