What initially sparked your interest in NDT?
My passion for NDT started with my curiosity about how things work beneath the surface—how materials, structures, and components can be examined without causing damage. The idea of using advanced technology to detect hidden flaws fascinated me. Over time, as I gained hands-on experience in different industries, I realized how critical NDT is in ensuring safety and reliability. The dynamic nature of the field, the continuous learning process, and the opportunity to solve real-world challenges have kept me deeply engaged ever since.
Take us through your career journey in NDT, from your early experiences to your current leadership position
My journey in non-destructive testing (NDT) has been dynamic, transitioning from hands-on inspection work for basic techniques to advanced methods. I started by gaining hands-on experience in various inspection techniques, including ECT, RFET, IRIS, UT, MPI and DPI. These early years allowed me to develop a strong technical skill set, particularly in tube inspections for industries like oil & gas, power plants, and manufacturing. As my career progressed, I worked across Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand on major projects like supervising tubing inspection teams at power plants, conducting annual ECT inspections at amusement parks, and performing inspections of critical items during plant shutdowns. These roles enhanced my problem-solving skills, decision-making, and adaptability. With over 7 years of experience, I was eventually involved with leadership roles- leading inspection teams, managing projects, and ensuring quality control. My multi-technique approach to troubleshooting became one of my key strengths. Beyond fieldwork, I became more involved in industry discussions, joining the ASNT RISE Leadership Class 2023/2024 and sharing my insights on LinkedIn under "From Syahirah’s Lens," where I advocate for the role of women in NDT and promote industry advancements.
Can you share any significant challenges you faced in your career and how you overcame them?
Throughout my career in NDT, I have encountered several challenges that tested my resilience, adaptability, and determination. One of the most significant challenges was gaining acceptance and proving my capabilities in a male-dominated industry. Early on, I faced scepticism about my technical skills and leadership potential, often working twice as hard to earn the same level of trust and recognition as my male counterparts. To overcome this, I focused on continuous learning and honing my technical expertise. I actively pursued certifications, gained hands-on experience in various NDT techniques, and consistently delivered accurate and reliable inspection results. Over time, my performance and dedication spoke for themselves, gradually breaking down biases and earning the trust of colleagues and clients. Another challenge was navigating international job opportunities. Despite having extensive experience, securing overseas roles proved difficult due to country-specific certifications, visa restrictions, and, in some regions, gender-based workplace limitations. To address this, I expanded my professional network, sought guidance from industry mentors, and remained persistent in applying for opportunities that aligned with my skills and aspirations. Additionally, moving from a purely technical role to developing leadership skills presented its own challenges. Moving beyond hands-on inspections to managing teams, making strategic decisions, and effectively communicating with clients required a new mindset. I took proactive steps by participating in leadership development programs, such as the ASNT RISE Leadership Class 2023/2024, and learning from experienced mentors. This helped me gain confidence in leadership while maintaining my technical expertise. Despite these challenges, each obstacle became an opportunity for growth. I learned that perseverance, self-improvement, and seeking support from the right people are key to overcoming barriers. These experiences have shaped me into a stronger professional and reinforced my passion for NDT.

What is that one 'Quote' that inspires you or goes well with your personality?
"In NDT, we inspect for flaws to prevent failure. In life, challenges make us stronger and wiser." Non-destructive Testing (NDT) identifies weaknesses in materials to ensure safety and longevity—just as life’s challenges reveal our limitations and areas for growth. Both processes serve the same purpose: preventing failure and fostering resilience. NDT inspectors detect flaws without damaging materials, just as life’s hardships expose our vulnerabilities without breaking us. These struggles offer insights, allowing us to adjust and improve—just like an inspector refining a maintenance plan. The key lesson? Success isn’t about avoiding failure but anticipating, understanding, and addressing weaknesses before they cause harm. Just as NDT evolves with new techniques, we must adapt in life, learning from challenges to grow stronger. Both NDT and life shape, refine, and prepare us for long-term success.
How can the NDT industry further promote diversity and inclusion, particularly for women?
The NDT industry can promote diversity and inclusion for women through these strategies:
- Creating Awareness and Challenging Stereotypes: Educating professionals about the importance of diversity and highlighting successful women in NDT to break stereotypes.
- Mentorship and Networking: Establishing mentorship programs and networking events for women to build connections and gain guidance from experienced leaders.
- Equal Opportunities for Advancement: Ensuring women have access to career growth, training, and leadership opportunities to thrive in the industry.
- Promoting Work-Life Balance: Offering flexible work options and policies like maternity leave to support women balancing career and personal life.
- Encouraging Female Participation in Training: Ensuring women have equal access to technical training and certification programs to develop necessary skills.
- Building a Supportive Culture: Creating a respectful, inclusive work environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and equal participation from all.
