Weld cracking is a serious issue that has in the past led to catastrophic failure of welded structures, vessels, pipelines and other assets and continues to pose a threat.

Knowledge of crack types and an understanding of the mechanisms by which cracking can arise are both essential to ensure the avoidance of cracking.

Also required is a knowledge of the factors that give rise to cracking. Materials susceptibility, joint design, welding process and procedure details including consumable selection, pre-heat, heat input and post weld heat treatment etc. all play an important role. Capability and selection of non-destructive testing techniques is also of paramount importance, as are in-service conditions and inspection strategies.

This webinar will delve into this crucial subject drawing on the knowledge and experience of TWI experts and speakers from industry.

Cracking types and mechanisms will be described and several case studies will be presented. Mitigation methods and management strategies will also be explored.

Speakers:

Joanna Nicholas
Team Manager, Metallurgy, Materials and Structural Integrity Group

Joanna joined TWI in 1999, and has been involved in research, materials selection and failure investigations, mainly with ferritic steels. Joanna has also supported engineering critical assessment activities by undertaking post-test metallographic assessment on fracture toughness test specimens. She has also been involved in various aspects of computer modelling, particularly for research projects.

Joanna has broad knowledge of ferritic steels with particular emphasis on hydrogen cracking and hydrogen diffusion, HAZ hardness, mooring chain, fasteners, in-service welding and 9% Ni steels. She has carried out numerous investigations in these areas including failure investigation as well as production qualification and research. She currently serves on several BSI committees, providing welding and metallurgy input to the standards as required. Joanna lectures on the IIW/EWF diploma, and provides training and mentoring in other areas of welding metallurgy specialisms.

Joanna was awarded CEng in 2005, IWE in 2016, FWeldI in 2017 and FIMMM in 2018. Joanna is a STEM Ambassador, and delivers various activities to local schoolchildren, aiming to retain their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and was awarded the Welding Institute/Armourers and Brasiers Award for Best STEM Ambassador in 2015.

Dave Howse - Consultant Welding Engineer

David Howse has more than 30 years’ experience in welding engineering, having worked on major projects relating to oil and gas, construction and infrastructure. He graduated in metallurgy from Leeds, later completing an EngD entitled ‘Improved productivity in fusion welding’ at Warwick, and has authored and contributed to more than 20 publications.

David joined TWI in 1994 as a senior project leader in the arcs section. He later spent time as section manager in lasers before, more recently, assuming a senior technical role in the Arc Processes, Fabrication and Welding Engineering section. David has provided technical support to many of TWI’s member companies and overseen a large number of research projects into various aspects of joining technology.
