Online Risk Monitoring of Corrosion Under Insulation is described for use in critical industrial assets using Electro-Magnetic Guided Radar (EMGR) technique.

CUI continues to be a challenge to the integrity of process, chemical, power and other industrial plants.  As this corrosion is not visible due to insulation and moisture can stay in the insulation for long periods, corrosion under insulation (CUI) is difficult to detect and locate. A number of NDT systems have been in use for CUI inspection with varying degrees of success depending on applications. The industry still spends a huge amount of their maintenance budget on routinely opening up the insulation to inspect the pipes and equipment.

Risk Based Inspection (RBI) is used to optimize the inspection plan for CUI but often leads to over-inspection or under-inspection scenarios. For better inspection scoping, a Risk Monitoring system using Electro-Magnetic Guided Radar (EMGR) is described in this presentation. This technology includes use of sensors embedded in the insulation and a data logger transmits data wirelessly to a central server. Risk analysis and localization for CUI risk severity are then accessed by the end user to help optimize CUI inspection plan. This provides important data for asset managers to plan, schedule and target their efforts.

This presentation will describe in more detail the principles of the technique and recent case studies from various deployments including in KSA.
