Advanced Focusing Techniques for Better UT Inspections

Key element for the industrial adoption of promising techniques is the experimental validation of the inspection capability and efficiency improvement that they can provide.

Due to the improved performance and efficiency of portable phased array UT units, and to the availability of software tools that ensure code-compliance, phased array is now a mature and accepted technology in various industries.

There is a lot of excitement around the next technological step in phased array, innovative techniques like “Full Matrix Capture” and the “Total Focusing Method”. But, a key element for the industrial adoption of these promising techniques is the experimental validation of the inspection capability and efficiency improvement that they can provide.

The session will include the following topics:

• Principles of Full Matrix Capture (FMC) data recording and advanced focusing techniques (TFM, STF)

• Demonstration of the benefits of FMC and advanced focusing, and discussion of the conditions required to fully exploit the potential of this new technology

• Case studies showing examination results on various components with industry-typical damage mechanisms: welding defects in carbon steel and dissimilar metal welds, HTHA, corrosion

• Considerations about inspection resolution, coverage, and inspection speed.
