Thermo Fisher Introduces DXR3 SmartRaman+ for At-Line Quality Control

Sources - @R&D World

Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the Thermo Scientific DXR3 SmartRaman+ Raman Spectrometer, a new analytical instrument designed to support at-line quality control (QC) processes in pharmaceutical and industrial manufacturing environments.

The system is designed to enable non-destructive Raman measurements directly through commonly used product containers and finished packaging. By eliminating the need for extensive sample preparation, the spectrometer helps maintain sample integrity while enabling faster analysis in production workflows.

Thermo Fisher Scientific highlights pharmaceutical fill-and-finish operations as a key application area for the new system. In these environments, at-line sampling and automated batch testing can provide faster feedback to production teams, supporting improved efficiency and quality control in manufacturing.

The DXR3 SmartRaman+ incorporates automated sampling combined with custom sample holders to reduce manual handling and minimize operator-to-operator variability. The company notes that the instrument’s hardware and software design is intended to simplify operation and reduce training time for routine QC users.

From a technical perspective, the spectrometer supports user-exchangeable 532 nm and 785 nm laser sources. This flexibility allows laboratories to select the most suitable excitation wavelength depending on the sample type and potential fluorescence effects during analysis.

The system also includes OPC UA connectivity, enabling integration with manufacturing data systems and digital production environments aligned with Industry 4.0 frameworks. This capability allows the spectrometer to be connected to automated workflows and centralized data platforms used in modern manufacturing facilities.

Beyond pharmaceutical applications, Thermo Fisher positions the instrument as a high-throughput Raman spectroscopy solution for industrial materials analysis and defect verification. Flexible sample handling options, including user-designed holders for different container shapes and formats, allow the system to adapt to a variety of testing environments.

Potential use cases cited by the company include fill-and-finish quality control in pharmaceutical production, adulterant detection in consumer products, and defect analysis in industrial laboratories. The introduction of the DXR3 SmartRaman+ reflects the growing role of non-destructive analytical techniques in modern manufacturing quality assurance and process monitoring.
