Teledyne FLIR has introduced the A8481, a high-definition mid-wave infrared (MWIR) science camera designed for research, testing and industrial measurement applications. The compact camera features a resolution of 1280 × 1024 pixels, offering four times the pixel count of conventional VGA-resolution A-Series models while maintaining compatibility with existing imaging systems and workflows.
The A8481 is designed to provide detailed thermal measurements for applications including non-destructive testing (NDT), electronics testing, battery development, combustion analysis, propulsion research and materials evaluation.
High-Resolution Thermal Imaging for Industrial Inspection
The A8481 features an 8 µm high-operating-temperature (HOT) MWIR strained-layer superlattice (SLS) detector and thermal sensitivity below 30 mK. These specifications support detailed radiometric measurements, enabling researchers and engineers to examine temperature variations across components and materials.
For NDT applications, thermal imaging can help assess temperature patterns and identify thermal anomalies that may warrant further investigation. The camera is also intended for testing environments where detailed thermal data is required to evaluate materials, components and systems.
Built around the established A67xx platform, the A8481 offers an upgrade path for laboratories seeking higher-resolution imaging without extensive modifications to existing equipment or infrastructure.
Integration with Existing Laboratory Workflows
The camera is compatible with FLIR's existing precision optics, mounting arrangements and Research Studio software. This compatibility is intended to simplify integration into established laboratory environments and help users retain existing equipment investments.
Connectivity options include GigE Vision, GenICam and CoaXPress. The camera also supports precision triggering and synchronisation for data acquisition, allowing thermal measurements to be coordinated with other testing equipment.
An integrated motorised three-position filter wheel provides additional flexibility for temperature measurements. Interchangeable microscope, macro and conventional lenses allow users to examine small components in detail or capture thermal data from larger assemblies.
High-Speed Imaging and Radiometric Analysis
For investigations involving rapidly changing thermal events, the A8481 supports windowed imaging modes with frame rates of up to 13,733 Hz. This capability is intended for applications that require high-speed observation and analysis of transient thermal behaviour.
Fully radiometric recording through FLIR Research Studio Professional enables users to retain measurement data for subsequent analysis, reporting and collaboration.
According to FLIR, the A8481 addresses the need for higher-resolution thermal data while reducing the additional cost and complexity that can accompany the adoption of larger imaging platforms.
Availability
The A8481 became available in October 2026 through Teledyne FLIR's international sales and distribution network. The camera is positioned for laboratories, research teams and industrial engineers seeking high-definition thermal measurement capabilities while maintaining compatibility with established equipment and software workflows.
