In the wake of the 28 March earthquake that impacted central Myanmar, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in collaboration with local specialists, has begun conducting advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections on key infrastructure to assess structural integrity without causing further damage.
Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Myo Thein Kyaw, visited several affected sites on Monday to oversee the inspection process, which includes buildings under the ministry’s jurisdiction. The initiative is part of a broader safety review aimed at safeguarding public infrastructure following the seismic event.
A four-member IAEA team comprising seasoned earthquake and disaster experts—each with field experience from global earthquake-hit regions including Mexico (2017), Albania (2019), Ecuador (2023), and Syria (2024)—is leading the assessments. They are supported by local engineers and specialists well-versed in Myanmar's structural landscape.
Utilizing a suite of cutting-edge NDT equipment, the team is able to evaluate the internal condition of structures without invasive procedures. Tools deployed include Rebar Detectors, Rebound Hammers, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) devices, and Infrared Cameras. These technologies are capable of identifying subsurface defects, voids, or cracks, helping engineers determine the safety and repair needs of buildings.
As part of their fieldwork, the team has already assessed the Ministry of Labour headquarters and the 1,000-bed General Hospital, two critical public facilities. They also performed in-depth diagnostics at the Human Resource Development Centre under the Ministry of Science and Technology, using multiple NDT methods to ensure accuracy and comprehensive coverage.
The inspections underscore the growing role of advanced diagnostics and international collaboration in post-disaster recovery efforts. By using non-destructive techniques, authorities aim to accelerate building rehabilitation while minimizing disruption.
Myanmar joins a list of countries that have received IAEA support in post-disaster scenarios, highlighting the global agency’s expanding role in civil safety beyond its traditional nuclear mandate.
