Cycle Inspect has launched the world’s first carbon fibre non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection training and certification program, setting a new standard for safety and professionalism in the global cycling industry. The program, aligned with ASNT standards, is the first to bring formalised, industrial-grade inspection training to the world of carbon fibre bicycles and components.

The certification is designed to empower cycling professionals with advanced knowledge in composite material theory and ultrasonic testing (UT), along with practical, hands-on experience in line with ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level 2 requirements. Successful candidates receive professional certification enabling them to perform industry-level inspections of carbon fibre structures, ensuring higher standards of safety and quality.

“Carbon fibre has revolutionised bicycle design, however, damage or defects can remain unseen to the naked eye and difficult to impossible to detect via basic testing techniques such as tap-testing. Until now, there's been no formal education and training programs, and no standardised approach to inspecting these materials for damage,” said Michael Biggs, Co-Founder of Cycle Inspect. “Our certification changes that. It brings industrial-level NDT knowledge and methods to the cycling world—accessible to anyone with a basic understanding of bike components.”

Christopher Howson, Co-Founder and NDT Lead at Cycle Inspect, added:

“This certification provides a significant leap forward for an industry bereft of options and to cyclists unaware of the hidden dangers of bicycle damage and defects.”

The comprehensive program includes self-paced online learning modules via Cycle Inspect’s digital platform, covering composite materials and ultrasound theory, followed by an intensive three-day practical training session in Newcastle, Australia. Participants also gain access to ‘Compass,’ Cycle Inspect’s AI-powered inspection and reporting platform, designed to assist with accurate diagnostics and data-driven reporting.

Targeted at professionals in bicycle maintenance, repair, and manufacturing, the certification bridges a critical gap in safety standards. Research by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), supported by Cycle Inspect, found that 25% of surveyed cyclists experienced component failure during normal use, while only 42% were aware of NDT methods—highlighting the industry’s urgent need for structured inspection training.

The full program officially launches in October 2025, with enrolments now open. Cycle Inspect also offers non-certified NDT Foundations courses aimed at improving general awareness of inspection principles among cycling enthusiasts and professionals.

By combining ASNT-aligned training, independent third-party assessments, and machine learning-powered inspection tools, Cycle Inspect’s certification marks a major advancement in bringing non-destructive testing standards to the cycling world—reinforcing a culture of safety and precision across the growing carbon fibre bicycle market.
