Certerra has acquired Universal Testing & Inspection Services, a New York-based provider of geotechnical drilling, special inspections, construction materials testing and laboratory services. The acquisition strengthens Certerra’s presence in the Northeastern United States and expands its capabilities across infrastructure, construction and engineering projects.
Universal serves public infrastructure, building construction and heavy civil construction markets. The acquisition supports Certerra’s strategy of expanding its geographic reach and technical service offerings while maintaining its focus on safety and service quality.
“Universal has built an outstanding reputation for technical excellence, quality, and client service in materials testing, lab service and analysis,” said Ed Lyon, CEO of Certerra. “Its addition enhances our capabilities in a key strategic market and creates new opportunities to deliver expanded solutions to public and private-sector clients throughout the region.”
Accredited Laboratory and Testing Capabilities
Universal operates a fully accredited laboratory under the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) programme. Its testing services cover soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, fireproofing materials and masonry.
Over its 35-year history, the company has expanded beyond laboratory-based materials testing to serve a wider range of markets and industry sectors. It has also extended its geographic footprint and established long-term relationships with public agencies, asset owners, contractors and prominent government organisations throughout the Northeast.
Universal’s work ranges from small-scale developments to complex government programmes valued at billions of dollars. Its combination of laboratory services, construction materials testing and inspection capabilities will broaden the services available through Certerra in the region.
Leadership and Regional Integration
As part of the transaction, Larry A. Mercardante, Universal’s second-generation owner and president, will join Certerra as Northeast Division President. With more than three decades of experience, Mercardante will lead Certerra’s operations across New York and New Jersey.
His responsibilities will include supporting regional growth initiatives, expanding service offerings and integrating Certerra’s specialised capabilities across the Northeast market.
“Joining Certerra is an exciting opportunity for our team and our clients,” said Mercardante. “Our organizations share a commitment to technical expertise, responsive service, and long-term client relationships. Together, we are well-positioned to provide even greater value and sophisticated testing resources to the communities and organizations we serve.”
The acquisition expands Certerra’s ability to serve public- and private-sector clients through a broader portfolio of engineering, inspection, laboratory and construction testing services.
