BINDT/PCN Introduces Dual Certification Pathway for MT, PT and VT Professionals

The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) has announced a significant update to its PCN certification scheme with the introduction of a new Dual Certification option for Level 1 and Level 2 candidates in magnetic particle testing (MT), penetrant testing (PT) and visual testing (VT).

Implemented under PCN24, the new certification pathway provides greater flexibility for NDT personnel by enabling certification across single-sector, dual-sector and multi-sector product sectors within a single qualification route.

The applicable product sectors remain consistent with those traditionally covered under the PCN scheme and include welds (w), castings (c), and forgings/wrought products (f/wp).

Under the updated framework, candidates can pursue certification through one of three pathways:

  • Single-sector certification covering any one of the three product sectors.
  • Dual-sector certification covering any two product sectors.
  • Multi-sector certification covering all three product sectors.

The introduction of dual-sector certification is intended to better align qualification pathways with the practical requirements of modern industry, where inspection personnel frequently work across multiple material types and component categories.

By combining two sectors within a single certification route, technicians can broaden their recognized competence without the need to obtain separate standalone certifications for each product sector.

According to BINDT, the new approach offers several advantages for both technicians and employers.

The expanded certification pathway can increase workforce versatility by enabling certified personnel to support a broader range of projects and industries, including oil and gas, aerospace, manufacturing, power generation and fabrication.

The structure also reduces duplication by allowing candidates to combine sectors within a single certification process, potentially lowering the time, administrative requirements and costs associated with obtaining multiple qualifications.

In addition, the dual-sector model reflects industry demand for inspection professionals capable of evaluating diverse products and components, supporting greater operational flexibility across inspection teams.

The update applies specifically to PCN Level 1 and Level 2 certifications and is expected to be particularly relevant for new entrants seeking broader qualifications early in their careers, existing technicians looking to expand their sector coverage, and employers focused on developing adaptable NDT workforces.

The introduction of dual certification represents BINDT/PCN's latest effort to modernize certification pathways while supporting evolving industry requirements and workforce development across the non-destructive testing sector.
