The Alberta government has awarded more than $5 million through the Alberta Industry Skills Grant to strengthen workforce development.
The grant program is designed to address persistent labour shortages by equipping workers with industry-certified, transferable skills that align with Alberta’s economic growth priorities. By partnering with employers, industry associations and advocacy organizations, the initiative supports training solutions that directly match industry needs.
Among the recipients, CWB Group has been awarded $1.45 million to expand non-destructive testing certification in the province. The project will provide training and certification in ultrasonic phased array NDT, a cutting-edge weld safety and quality inspection technology new to Alberta. According to the announcement, the project will prepare 120 individuals to sit for industry-recognized certification exams.
Ultrasonic phased array technology is increasingly critical in sectors such as construction, oil and gas, and aerospace, where ensuring weld safety and integrity is a priority. By supporting certification in this advanced NDT method, the initiative aims to raise standards and build a sustainable talent pipeline in Alberta’s industrial landscape.
Other funded projects include:
- Thermal Insulation Association of Canada – Building Mechanical Insulation’s Sustainable Future ($1.5 million), training 300 Albertans as heat and frost insulators.
- Alberta Aviation Council – Aviation Futures Alberta ($1.5 million), training 266 Albertans for roles in aviation and aerospace, combining classroom learning with industry internships.
- Technology Alberta – TechFIT Management Skills Training ($718,620), providing 200 Albertans with critical management and innovation skills for small and emerging tech firms.
The investment underscores the province’s commitment to bridging skills gaps, preparing workers for high-demand roles, and supporting industries such as NDT, aviation, technology, and construction with specialized training.
