The Abia State Government has inaugurated a fully equipped material testing laboratory in Umuahia, marking a significant step in strengthening quality assurance for infrastructure and construction projects across the state.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the development during the weekly press briefing on Monday, confirming that the facility is fully operational and offering a wide range of testing services critical for ensuring durability and safety.
“The laboratory is in full operation now and offers a range of services including Concrete Testing, Soil Testing, Aggregate Testing, Asphalt Flexible Pavement Testing, Steel Reinforcement Testing, Non-Destructive Testing, and Fields Testing,” Kanu said.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), a core service of the new laboratory, allows engineers to assess material integrity without causing damage. This ensures that critical structures—from roads to high-rise buildings—undergo rigorous quality checks while remaining intact.
“We are happy to announce that the laboratory is fully installed and is up and running now. The installation of this lab will ensure very high quality of engineering and building projects in the state,” Kanu added.
By embedding NDT alongside conventional methods, the Abia State Government aims to raise the standard of project execution, minimize risks of structural failures, and promote sustainable infrastructure development.
