Position Summary
The Technical Assistant supports the execution of fire testing activities at a dedicated testing facility, assisting in the preparation, instrumentation, execution, and evaluation of tests on building products and materials. The role contributes to determining whether client products meet the requirements of relevant standards, while operating under strict health, safety, and quality procedures. The position also supports laboratory housekeeping and provides assistance to technical and supervisory staff as required.
Responsibilities
- Liaising with and assisting clients, including contractors and third parties, during the construction of test specimens
- Preparing test specimens in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate standards and internal procedures, under the supervision of the Testing / Technical Officer and Laboratory Supervisor / Team Leader, when required
- Determining physical properties of test specimens and/or component parts, where required
- Instrumenting test specimens and preparing diagrams showing the positions and types of all instrumentation used
- Operating the furnace and ancillary equipment to ensure compliance with appropriate test requirements, when required
- Evaluating the performance of specimens in accordance with applicable test standards, under the supervision of the responsible Testing / Technical Officer
- Demolishing and safely disposing of test specimens within a reasonable timeframe to ensure maximum utilisation of test frames
- Ensuring the laboratory is kept clean and tidy at all times, particularly with respect to the allocated furnace
Skills / Qualifications
- Experience or knowledge of working to Standard Operating Procedures within strict Health & Safety guidelines
- Practical skills in using tools within a construction, engineering, or shop-fitting environment
- Interest in materials testing
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-starter with good organisational skills
- Proactive, logical, and methodical approach to work
- Possession of a valid FLT license is desirable
Working Pattern
- Ability to work an alternating shift pattern:
- Monday to Friday, 6am – 2pm
- Monday to Thursday, 10am – 8pm
