Position Summary

Element Materials Technology is seeking a Department Manager – NDT to lead its Non-Destructive Testing operations at a high-profile aerospace-focused laboratory. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role is responsible for driving operational excellence, team leadership, and financial performance, while ensuring compliance with industry standards and exceeding client expectations. The successful candidate will bring deep experience in NDT (especially PT, MT, and Etch), strong people leadership skills, and a passion for continuous improvement in a fast-paced, hands-on lab environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day departmental operations, ensuring safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage full departmental P&L, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Hire, train, and develop a high-performing NDT team, with a focus on technical competency and employee growth.
  • Set clear performance goals, provide coaching, and lead performance reviews and disciplinary processes.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
  • Build and manage strong customer relationships, serving as the key technical and operational contact.
  • Support project execution from quotation to final delivery, ensuring timelines and specifications are met.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and calibrated, and all testing complies with industry and customer standards.
  • Drive a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the department.
  • Be available for flexible scheduling, including off-hours and weekend support, as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or technical degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in NDT (including PT, MT, Etch); 7+ years preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical teams of 20+ employees.
  • Strong team-building, performance management, and coaching skills.
  • Business acumen with experience managing budgets and department-level financials.
  • Aerospace industry experience highly desirable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with RCCA methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • U.S. citizenship or export compliance-eligible status required.

Work Environment

  • Hands-on laboratory and industrial setting.
  • Exposure to machinery, chemicals, and testing equipment.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE.
  • Physical activities include lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing, walking, and bending.
