Position Summary:

The Materials Engineering Apprentice supports the selection, testing, evaluation, and improvement of materials used in manufacturing components and products. The role assists with material deviation requests, material analysis, and failure investigations while working closely with design and engineering teams to meet product performance requirements. The apprentice also contributes to material selection activities, sustainability initiatives, and compliance with industry standards while developing technical expertise in materials engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in evaluating material properties such as strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.
  • Support the analysis and review of material specifications and technical requirements.
  • Learn and assist in conducting basic failure analysis and root cause investigations.
  • Contribute to material improvement recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams to support product performance objectives.
  • Assist with Material Deviation requests and related documentation.
  • Support material selection activities by evaluating appropriate metals and alloys for specific applications.
  • Investigate material failures and contribute to recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.
  • Develop an understanding of customer specifications, NDT requirements, and material-related standards.
  • Stay informed about new materials, sustainability initiatives, and industry developments.
  • Work with various material categories, including metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • Support activities involving heat treatment processes and material performance evaluation.
  • Assist in the review and understanding of technical requirements and engineering documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Metallurgy or Material Science Technology (B.E. or B.Tech) from a reputed university.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Training in software tools such as PTC Windchill (PLM), ANSYS, MATLAB, or other material simulation software is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of ISO and ASTM standards is beneficial.
  • Certifications related to ISO and ASTM standards are considered beneficial.

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with various materials and heat treatment processes, including metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • Understanding of ferrous and non-ferrous castings, heat-treated forgings, raw materials, high-strength sheets, hardware, machined heat-treated parts, suspension/sintered parts, and metal joining/friction welding.
  • Knowledge of material selection principles and material performance requirements.
  • Root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Preferred knowledge of metallic additive manufacturing.
  • Understanding of customer specifications, NDT requirements, and technical documentation.
  • Strong teamwork skills and willingness to learn in a collaborative environment.
