Position Summary

The Certified Welding Inspector performs field observations, inspections, and testing activities on construction projects of moderate complexity. The role involves inspecting welded and bolted structural steel connections, mechanical piping systems, and pressure vessels, as well as supporting destructive and non-destructive testing activities. The position requires close coordination with project teams, adherence to industry standards, and accurate documentation of findings while contributing to the development and mentoring of other technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Field Activities
    • Perform observations, testing, inspections, and sampling of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement
    • Execute tasks based on project requirements under the guidance of senior technicians, staff professionals, and project managers
    • Conduct inspections in fabrication facilities or on mechanical piping systems and pressure vessels, as required
  • Testing Procedures
    • Conduct routine observations of structural steel and reinforcing steel, including welded or bolted connections, using various methodologies and testing equipment in accordance with industry standards
    • Perform testing activities that may include ground penetrating radar (GPR) structural surveys, material verification, and corrosion surveys
  • Data Collection
    • Perform calculations and data reduction based on sampling, test results, and inspections
    • Carry out drafting and other administrative duties as required
    • Maintain organization of field equipment and notify the supervisor of broken or missing equipment
  • Communication
    • Maintain daily communication with site contractors, technicians, and project managers regarding site conditions and additional testing requirements
    • Attend project meetings as requested
  • Training and Development
    • Receive training in ECS methodologies for project observations, inspections, and testing
    • Document findings accurately in accordance with accepted engineering practices
    • Mentor other technicians as they develop in their careers
  • Career Development
    • Support enhancement of professional skills to enable career advancement within the company
    • Encourage participation in internal and external training programs and certification opportunities

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess and maintain at least two specialty certifications from recognized industry authorities such as NRC, NICET, WACEL, ACI, IFC, AWS, ASNT, or ASTM, and be willing to obtain advanced certifications such as AWS CWI or Ultrasonic Level II
  • Ability to carry 40–70 lbs multiple times per day and occasionally lift up to 85 lbs to waist height
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Suitable transportation for job site use, with mileage reimbursement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of destructive and non-destructive testing principles, applications, and standards
  • Strong understanding of heavy construction safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, peers, and supervisors
  • Proficiency with electronic devices including phones, tablets, and laptops
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and construction plans
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to calibrate NDE equipment if focused on NDE testing
