Position Summary:
The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) performs welding inspection activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications. The role involves conducting visual and destructive weld inspections, supporting welding quality assurance processes, and maintaining accurate documentation for infrastructure and structural projects. The inspector works in a fabrication shop environment in Schenectady, NY and collaborates with project managers, welding engineers, and NDT personnel to support construction quality and process improvements.
Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance & Inspection:
- Perform visual and destructive weld inspections to ensure compliance with AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, ASME, and DOT standards.
- Monitor welding operations and verify that welding procedures and personnel qualifications meet applicable requirements.
- Identify and document weld defects and non-conformities.
- Conduct magnetic particle (MT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) inspections where certified.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate inspection records and generate professional reports using proprietary inspection software.
- Verify and review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder certifications.
- Contribute to quality documentation systems.
Collaboration & Process Improvement:
- Work closely with project managers, welding engineers, and NDT staff.
- Participate in process optimization reviews and corrective action reports.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- One (1) to ten (10) years of hands-on structural welding inspection experience.
- Strong English communication skills, both spoken and written.
- Basic math and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and construction plans.
- Willingness to travel to the fabrication shop in Schenectady.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MT and UT certifications (Level I or Level II).
- Experience with bolting inspections.
- Familiarity with ASME standards.
- Experience working on DOT or public infrastructure projects.
