I am passionate about imaging technologies and solutions, with over 23 years of extensive experience in infrared imaging science. Throughout my career, I've worked for leading imaging companies such as Inframetrics, FLIR Systems, and MoviTHERM, where I currently serve as the Vice President of Business Development. I hold a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University and an MBA from Boston University. I have also studied Digital Marketing Analytics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

… your career spans multiple sectors and roles. Can you share a pivotal moment that significantly influenced your career path? What key achievements are you most proud of in your career?

A pivotal moment in my career was when FLIR Systems acquired Inframetrics and Indigo Systems. This acquisition allowed me to work with science-grade infrared camera systems, significantly shaping my career path. It allowed me to delve deeper into advanced imaging technology and apply it to various industries, expanding my expertise in the field.

One of the key achievements I’m most proud of is building a sales and support team from scratch to represent this advanced camera technology. I started with the U.S. market and eventually expanded globally, helping establish a strong foundation for these cutting-edge solutions worldwide.

… speaking of leadership, how would you describe your leadership philosophy and management style? Can you share a challenging leadership experience and how you overcame it?

My leadership philosophy centers around helping people discover what truly excites them—what gets them out of bed in the morning. I believe that when individuals are aligned with their passions, it creates a powerful synergy with the organization’s needs, resulting in a win-win situation for both. My management style is about finding that alignment and supporting my team in reaching their full potential by connecting their interests with the organization’s goals.

One of the most challenging leadership experiences I’ve faced was helping others navigate organizational change. When information is scarce, people often fear the worst, leading to uncertainty and resistance. To overcome this, I focused on helping my team understand the steps involved in the change process and how humans naturally respond to it. By fostering self-awareness and explaining why they might be feeling anxious or uneasy, I guided them through the transition more smoothly. This not only helped them cope better, but it also ensured that the organization continued to move forward successfully.

… the tech industry is always evolving. What current trends in the sensing technologies industry do you find most exciting? How do you see the industry evolving in the next five years?

One of the most exciting trends in the sensing technologies industry is reducing infrared (IR) camera pricing while performance improves. This opens up access to high-quality imaging for a broader range of applications. I’m also fascinated by the growing use of connected sensors through IoT and the significant reductions in size, weight, and power (SWaP) of these devices. Combining these advances with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we gather, interpret, and act on sensor data.

In the next five years, the industry will evolve with even smaller, more power-efficient sensors offering increased wireless connectivity and integration into mesh networks. These advances will improve situational awareness through fixed sensor installations, enabling real-time industry monitoring. AI will play an even bigger role, enhancing decision-making by analyzing data from multiple connected sensors, allowing more accurate and timely responses to dynamic environments.

… can you discuss an innovative project you led at MoviTHERM and its impact on the company?

One innovative project I led at MoviTHERM was the development of the company’s strategic direction. The key to this project was identifying what we do best—our core strengths—and aligning those capabilities with specific market needs. This process not only helped sharpen our focus but also allowed us to prioritize the areas where we could make the most impact.

A crucial part of this strategy involved developing the discipline to say "no" to opportunities that didn’t align with our strengths or long-term goals, which helped us stay focused and avoid spreading our resources too thin. By maintaining a clear focus on our capabilities and market alignment, this project had a lasting impact on the company, streamlining operations and positioning us for sustainable growth.

… when it comes to problem-solving, everyone has their own approach. How do you approach problem-solving when faced with complex challenges?

When faced with complex challenges, my approach to problem-solving starts with staying calm and taking a deep breath. This helps me keep a clear mind and avoid reacting impulsively. I then focus on the facts, ensuring I understand the situation based on reality rather than assumptions or opinions. Data is critical to get a full picture of what’s happening.

Once I have the facts, I get some elevation, meaning I don’t get too narrow in my perspective. I step back and take a high-level view of the situation to see how everything connects. Finally, I often go to the whiteboard. As a visual person, I find that laying everything out visually helps me see patterns and connections more clearly, which aids in finding the best solution.

… what strategies do you employ to foster a positive work environment and company culture at MoviTHERM?

At MoviTHERM, we foster a positive work environment and company culture by developing and living by core values that serve as our compass. These values are: We are One, We are Innovative, We are Driven, and We are Savvy.

The value “We are One” is particularly important in promoting a strong team dynamic. It emphasizes respect and inclusivity, supporting one another, and celebrating achievements together. We encourage positivity and focus on both personal and professional growth. We also prioritize making time for shared moments of laughter and fun, strengthening our bonds and making the workplace enjoyable and collaborative. These values help create a culture where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute to the company's success.

Mr. Bursell, team dynamics are so important. Creating a positive work environment is crucial these days. How do you build and maintain effective teams?

Building and maintaining effective teams starts with hiring individuals who align with our company values. These values are the foundation of everything we do, so it’s essential that new team members share and embrace them from the start.

Once someone is hired, we continuously gauge their performance against these values by setting specific growth goals that align with them. This ensures that every team member contributes to our success and grows in a way that supports our culture.

We also prioritize recognizing and celebrating team and individual performances that reflect our company values. This recognition reinforces our values and motivates everyone to strive for excellence while maintaining a positive and collaborative work environment.

… how do you stay updated with the latest advancements in your field? Are there specific resources, networks, or strategies you rely on?

I stay updated with the latest advancements in my field by actively engaging with various resources. Attending industry shows and conferences is a key strategy, as it allows me to connect with thought leaders, see the latest innovations firsthand, and stay current with emerging trends.

I also rely on digital and print periodicals to stay informed about new developments and research in the industry. Additionally, I find great value in listening to podcasts and participating in professional social media groups, where I can discuss with peers and stay on top of the latest news and ideas circulating in the field.

Can you discuss the role of mentorship and professional networks in your career?

Mentorship and professional networks have played a crucial role in shaping my career. Having role models and mentors has been invaluable in guiding my work ethic, educational pursuits, and even my career choices. Mentors have helped me see different perspectives and pushed me to grow in ways I might not have on my own.

A key part of mentorship is helping others discover what excites them—what makes them tick. It’s incredibly rewarding to help someone align their passion with their professional goals.

Professional networks are equally important as they provide a resource network that extends beyond the immediate team. These connections are vital for new team members, partner technology providers, and engineering solution partners. Leveraging these networks allows me to offer clients more complete, innovative solutions, enhancing the overall value we can deliver.

Mr. Bursell, we all face tough times, sometimes professionally too. Can you share a situation where you faced a significant challenge or failure, but your presence of mind and expertise helped turn it into an opportunity or a new start that was even better than expected?

One of the most significant challenges I faced was parting ways with FLIR Systems after 23 years of working there. Initially, it was difficult not to take it personally, as I saw it as a reflection of who I was. However, soon after, I was presented with an opportunity at MoviTHERM. Taking the leap of faith to join a smaller company was a big decision, but it ended up being one of the best moves of my career.

At MoviTHERM, I could apply the experience and knowledge I gained from working in a large organization to a smaller, more agile, and fast-moving environment.
