Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) - Level III

The Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Level III course is designed for professionals seeking advanced expertise and leadership in the TOFD method of ultrasonic testing for weld inspection. TOFD is a highly sensitive and accurate technique used in nondestructive testing to detect defects in welds. It relies on the time of flight of ultrasonic pulses to determine the position and size of reflectors, offering a reliable alternative to amplitude-based sizing.

In a TOFD system, a pair of ultrasonic probes is positioned on opposite sides of a weld. The transmitter probe emits an ultrasonic pulse that is received by the probe on the other side, known as the receiver. In undamaged pipes, the receiver detects two waves: one traveling along the surface and one reflecting off the far wall. However, when a crack is present, diffraction of the ultrasonic wave occurs at the crack tip(s). The depth of the crack tip(s) can be automatically calculated using simple trigonometry based on the measured time of flight of the pulse.

Responsibilities of Certified Level III:

• A Level III certified individual in Ultrasonic TOFD has demonstrated competence not only in performing TOFD testing but also in directing and supervising other operators. Level III personnel possess the following capabilities:
• The ability to evaluate and interpret results according to existing standards, codes, and specifications
• Sufficient practical knowledge of materials, fabrication, processes, and product technology to select appropriate Ultrasonic TOFD methods, establish techniques, and assist in defining acceptance criteria when none are otherwise available
• A general familiarity with other NDT methods
• Within the defined scope of their certification, Ultrasonic TOFD Level III personnel may be authorized to:
• Assume full responsibility for a test facility or examination center, including its staff
• Establish, review, and validate Ultrasonic Testing instructions and procedures for accuracy and technical correctness
• Interpret codes, standards, specifications, and procedures
• Designate specific Ultrasonic TOFD test methods, techniques, and procedures to be used
• Perform all tasks at all levels within the scope and limitations of their certification
• Provide guidance to Ultrasonic TOFD personnel at all levels
• Level III certified personnel may also be authorized to conduct and supervise PCN qualification examinations on behalf of the British Institute of NDT (BINDT).
• It is strongly recommended by BINDT that Level III personnel performing routine NDT duties in a specific product or industry sector hold and maintain Level II certification in the applicable method(s) and sector(s).
