Acoustic Emission

Acoustic emission testing for safe, sound pressure equipment

Verifying the integrity of pressure equipment under stress is essential to maintaining its safety and protecting your assets. When a material undergoes stress or a series of internal changes, it generates energy from localized sources which produces sound waves.

Our acoustic emissions testing, carried out in accordance with industry standards EN 15495:2007 and EN 14584:2005, is a non-destructive method for detecting growing metal deformations, cracks, corrosion and defects at an early stage. This technique pinpoints the active defect or stressed area, significantly developing within the structure which could endanger equipment integrity or safety.

By monitoring sound waves emitted as a result of changes in materials, our inspections can provide you with the information you need to guarantee optimal safety. With our acoustic emission testing services, we help you detect, prevent and implement measures against any failure in your pressure equipment.

Our many years of experience in the field combined with the expertise of our service engineers enable us to offer reliable, time and cost-efficient inspections tailored to your needs.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) for corrosion and flaw detection

With innovation and the introduction of more complex geometries in pressure vessels, keeping your equipment in safe working order has become more challenging. We implement acoustic emissions methods that bypass the difficulties often faced when carrying out this type of maintenance. Firstly, our comprehensive method requires no operational interruptions, decommissioning or shutdown; it can be carried out during material operation, making it a time-efficient option.

In addition, our method does not require the introduction of personnel, water or energy into the vessel. It enables you to monitor and inspect your entire pressure equipment, from tanks to welds. We detect energy emitted by the equipment itself, obtain immediate feedback and analyze the results, enabling you to take protective measures, such as determining appropriate pressure levels, at an early stage. Finally, ours is a holistic approach, which monitors the global area of pressure equipment structures, not only a localized area.

Non-invasive acoustic emissions inspection

Acoustic emission testing is often performed parallel to the Hydro-test.

Acoustic emission testing requires a minimum of three acoustic emission sensors installed on the outside of the structure via rope access to locate expanding defects by triangularly detecting the acoustic waves being emitted. There are three principal phases involved:
1. Prior to testing, an attenuation survey is performed to plan the positioning of the sensors.
2. Sensor responses are checked and collected data is recorded in order to provide a complete and understandable evaluation.
3. Upon completion of the data evaluation, the client is provided a report listing the specific areas requiring follow-up non-destructive testing.
Acoustic emission testing is a method which can be applied to a wide range of areas and pressure equipment:

  • Tubes
  • Tanks
  • Spherical reservoirs
  • Fiber-reinforced materials
  • Gas station tanks and containers
  • Gas and hydrogen reservoirs

Unparalleled expertise in acoustic emission methods

We have over twenty years of experience in advanced NDT techniques and special applications. Our inspection team is one of the best-resourced in the world, and our extensive involvement in equipment development, inspection solutions and accredited training courses demonstrates our commitment and leadership in this sector.

Advanced NDT Training Courses

The increasing use of advanced ultrasonic testing techniques for the inspection of industrial plants and structures has prompted us at TÜV Rheinland Sonovation to design our NDT training courses to transfer this knowledge. We offer NDT training courses for Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and Phased Array (PA) with trainers who have a broad practical and theoretical knowledge gained over many years.

Courses are available to obtain either a formal NDT qualification or according to client needs, such as training for managers and design engineers or for quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) personnel to interpret and review NDT inspection results.

We are accredited to offer NDT training courses for UT, TOFD and PA in accordance with the International Standard ISO 9712 (former European Standard EN 473) and can also offer courses to the recommended practices of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). Our courses are held in English, German, and Dutch languages.

Benefits of our NDT Training Courses at a glance

By using the training courses at the accredited TÜV Rheinland Sonovation Training School for advanced NDT you benefit from:

  • Well-qualified trainers with solid expert knowledge.
  • Knowledge transfer of many years of experience in the field of advanced non-destructive testing.
  • Learning extensive practical and theoretical aspects.
  • Accredited training courses.
  • Our international background.
  • For certification, a choice between the schemes of PCN (UK), HSKO (NL) and Sector (D).
  • Qualification for a certification that is recognised by most employers, third parties, and government authorities.

Functional and profitable with accurate corrosion mapping services

SeeScan® corrosion mapping can accurately monitor progressive damage so that you can develop effective and cost-efficient maintenance strategies. With SeeScan® you can conduct online measurements at high temperatures to improve the probability of detecting corrosion and precisely pinpoint developing trends. Mapping many different as well as complex geometries, SeeScan® provides visual data about a defined test area. This way it presents thickness measurement results in an easy-to-understand topographical color map.

SeeScan® corrosion mapping services reduce costs and minimize inspection times to support you in maintaining the operational functionality and profitability of your assets and investments.

Corrosion mapping with our SeeScan® inspection approach

Combining conventional ultrasonic testing procedures with miniature video camera technology, SeeScan® provides a simple yet highly effective method of collecting and displaying ultrasonic data during corrosion inspection.

Using a small video camera, SeeScan® records data via a tiny infrared LED light mounted on top of a transducer. The infrared light generates a bright spot, which is assigned a coordinate on the X-Y pixel matrix of the video image. The system simultaneously tracks a synchronized ultrasonic signal and converts the measured thickness or amplitude to a correlating color. The combined information is then displayed on the monitor in real time as a composite color image to provide you clear and accurate data in an easy-to-read format.

SeeScan® evaluates the condition of:

  • Lines and piping
  • Vessels that cannot be opened due to economic or operational reasons
  • Systems prone to hydrogen damage
  • Complex structures such as valves, tee pieces and dome ends

SeeScan® enables you to conduct non-invasive, in-service inspection at temperatures ranging from -25° C to over 300° C.
