SIGMA NDT provides tank floor scanning services using the  Low Frequency Elctromagnetic Technique “Falcon Mark II” system. SIGMA NDT can also inspect the welds using the Hawk eye System.

The Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET) does not use permanent magnets as is common in Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) equipment. The Falcon Mark II can scan through coatings and tightly bonded scale. The system is lightweight, battery operated, and portable.

The Falcon Mark II is used to scan the floor plates for topside and underside corrosion. Areas identified with the scanner are then marked and verified with ultrasonics. SIGMA NDT also offers a smaller Falcon JR. to inspect inaccessible areas around the floor such as support legs, sumps, buckled annular plates, etc.

The Hawkeye is used to scan the welds. It is used to detect surface and subsurface cracks. SIGMA NDT also offers Magnetic Particle Inspections and Vacuum Box Testing as alternatives.

To date, SIGMA NDT has conducted numerous inspections of Stacks, Columns, and Towers in various types of process facilities. These are primarily conducted on Carbon Steel structures because they are magnetic.

SIGMA NDT uses it’s SIGMA NDT Viper Magnetic Crawler for such applications especially when one cannot gain accessibility via scaffolding or lifts. Data can be collect using either LFET or Ultrasonics.

Various types of pressure vessels can be inspected using the Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET). Using LFET, the actual wall plates can be inspected from inside or outside the pressure vessel. Welds can be tested for cracking through the usage of the Hawkeye Crack Detection System. Thus, a complete inspection of the pressure vessel can be performed. Our highly trained staff can also provide Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, and Ultrasonic Inspection services.

For those clients with boilers, SIGMA NDT, Inc. provides numerous D/A Tank (Deaereator) inspections. SIGMA NDT also provides pressure vessel inspections on Process Columns, Mixing/Agitation Vessels, and Reactors.

Whether a metal is magnetic or non-magnetic, SIGMA NDT can provide crack detection services for various geometries of plant equipment. While the current SIGMA NDT Hawkeye Crack Detection Systems that are field deployed can detect a crack within 1/8" of the surface, new prototype sensors are detecting cracks within 3/8" of the surface. If desired by the client, prove-up can be done using Magnetic Particle or Dye Penetrant testing.

Scanning can be done using single sensor elements covering a 1/2” wide scan path, or using (8) elements to scan a 4” wide scan path.

Sigma provides pipeline scanning services for piping that is above ground and uninsulated. The piping can be painted or have a coating and still be scanned. For this service, we use the PS-2000 Pipe Scanning System based on the principles of Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET). The LFET technology allows to rapidly scan areas of piping to achieve greater than 90% coverage. The PS-2000 can be used as a quantitative tool, or as a rapid screening tool. In the screening mode, we use A-Scan Ultrasonics to prove-up any flaw indications. This technology is applicable to magnetic and non-magnetic piping. Cast Iron or other cast materials can also be tested.

In Nuclear Power Plants, piping such as Service Water Systems and Fire Protection Systems can be scanned to detect and quantify MIC (microbiologically induced corrosion) Attack and even FAC (Flow Accelerated Corrosion).

In coal burning Fossil Power Plants, coal mill piping can be rapidly scanned for ID erosion from pulverized coal.

For short-run underground piping, SIGMA NDT can provide inspection services by gaining access to the pipe ID. Then we can employ Remote Field Electromagnetic Technique

SIGMA NDT provides very specialized inspections for Water Tube and Fire Tube boilers of all sizes. For Generating Banks in Drum-to-Drum Boilers, we provide full-length tube inspections that can detect and quantify flaws in the straight and bend sections of the Boiler Tubing. We can conduct this test from the Mud Drum (w/ CL to CL <25’) or Steam Drum.

For the inspection of Boiler Generating Banks, we use the Multichannel Remote Field Electromagnetic Technique (RFET) System.For the Furnace or Waterwall tubes in larger Industrial & Utility Boilers, we provide Boiler Waterwall Scanning services. This service detects ID or OD flaws on the hot-side half of the tube. To gain access to these areas, we can work from hard scaffolding or swing staging. In gas burning boilers, no surface preparation is needed for this service.

The same is true for most oil burning units. If a boiler burns coal, many times a quality high-pressure water blast is all that is necessary. For the inspection of the waterwalls, we use the Tube Scanning system based on Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET).

Our LFET technology scans approx. 120 degrees of the tube circumference with a single pass of the LFET scanner. Any flaw indications (or areas that we cannot scan due to tube bends, welds, viewports, etc.) are proved-up using A-Scan Ultrasonics.SIGMA NDT also provides O.D. scanning services for the Super Heater and Reheater areas of boilers, and sometimes even the Economizers. This service also employs the LFET Tube Scanning System.For the inspection of Generating Banks found in Drum-to-Drum Boilers, there are three other methods, which are Spot Check UT, IRIS Ultrasonic Testing, and I.D. Laser Profiling (LOTUS). Traditional Spot Check UT is conducting from the O.D. (fireside) of the tubes, and is generally limited to areas that a person can access, or “put his hands on.” This gives very limited coverage and leaves a large percentage of surface area untested.

Ultrasonic Testing uses transmission of high frequency sound waves into a material to detect imperfections within the material or changes in material properties.
