Most single crystal zero degree compression wave probes produced for direct contact applications are produced in two styles: hard faced or soft faced.
Hard Face probes which have a ceramic face to give hard wearing properties or soft face which uses a replaceable membrane to protect the semi-fragile face of the transducer.
The hard face probes allow the probe to be scanned on hard, yet relatively smooth materials for extended periods. However as the face is brittle and prone to premature cracking when something sharp like grit or swarfbecomes between the probe and the material under test.
The soft faced probes are very effective on relatively rough surfaces such as unfinished or cast parts but the membrane is prone to being punctured or tearing which can result in damaging the probe face. Also when attaching the membrane there is the possibility of air pockets forming between the membrane and probe, resulting in a loss of sensitivity.
Our Steel Faced transducer has a face which allows the probe to be effectively used on both smooth and rough components without the possibility of cracking the face or having to use a membrane.
These steel faced probes come in 10mm diameters with frequencies of 2MHz, 2.5MHz, 4MHz and 5MHz with either Subvis, Lemo 00, Microdotconnectors. For other options please contact us.
For ordering purposes the part number for a Steel Faced Probe with a 10mm diameter 5MHz crystal and a subvis connector is SC10-5(S).
