LIBS Analyzers

SciAps offers four hardware platforms with our handheld LIBS analyzers.

From sophisticated analysis of ultra-low elemental concentrations in alloys, ores, brines and powders, to basic material or scrap sorting, SciAps offers a model for your application. And we defy obsolescence. Any lower performing model can be upgraded to a higher performing model at any time. You’re never obsolete with a SciAps LIBS.

Z-200

The most advanced, highest performance handheld LIBS Platform.

The Z-200 is our standard 2-spectrometer system with range 190 nm – 625 nm. It is suitable for analysis of any element in the periodic table with the exception of S, Br, Cl, F, Rb, Cs, H, O, and N. The Z-200 may be preconfigured for specific applications such as alloys, minerals, and environmental soil. Operators may also use the accompanying PC software to set up their own calibrations for a variety of material types – glasses, polymers, archaeological and forensics samples, and many others. It is shipped pre-calibrated for a suite of elements in these cases. Or a user may purchase the Z with our full empirical and PC software apps and calibrate using their own materials.

  • Spectrometer/Range - 190 nm – 625 nm
  • Analytical Range - One or more lines from all elements except H, F, Cl, Br, N, O, Rb, Cs, S

Z-200 C+ New!

A dedicated alloy analyzer capable of measuring carbon content in alloys

It’s the world’s only handheld analyzer capable of analyzing carbon in steels and stainless – even L-grades. The Z-200 C+ is pre-calibrated for iron and stainless base alloys including carbon. The carbon LOD is about 0.01%. Other alloy bases may be added including nickel, copper, aluminum, titanium, cobalt, etc. Users may also add or augment factory calibrations, and use type standardization app (included).

  • Spectrometer/Range - 190 nm – 625 nm

Contains a third spectrometer dedicated to the 190 – 230 nm range to provide extra high resolution for carbon analysis.

Z-300

Analyzes every element in the periodic table.

The Z-300 is the LIBS of choice for applications in geochem, mining, oil & gas. It is our 3-spectrometer system, spanning a wavelength range of 190 nm – 950 nm. This range allows for the entire periodic table to be analyzed including critical elements such as S, H, the halogens and others. Like the Z-200, the Z-300 is factory calibrated for specific applications in mining and environmental applications. Examples include lithium in brines and hard rock, beryllium, boron and carbon analysis, fluorine, and sodium in soils or other materials. Operators may also use the accompanying PC software to set up their own calibrations for a variety of material types – glasses, polymers, archaeological and forensics samples, and many others.

Z-50

OES made easy, for basic material sorting and ID

Looking for a basic materials analyzer? The Z-50 offers the same features as other low-end LIBS units on the market. It uses air-burn (no argon purge) and covers the spectral range of 190 nm – 625 nm, and thus has less precision and higher limits of detection than the higher-end Z’s. It will perform basic alloy sorting, quick screening of ores and cores for mining or other material analysis applications for high concentrations of target elements. But…there’s a critical difference between the Z-50 and other low-end LIBS! Users can start with the Z-50 and upgrade it to the Z-200, 200 C+ or Z-300 at any later date. If your analytical needs change, why be locked into a low-performing, non-upgradeable LIBS platform from a different supplier.

  • Spectrometer/Range - 190 nm – 625 nm
  • Analytical Range - One or more lines from all elements except H, F, Cl, Br, N, O, Rb, Cs, S

Uniquely SciAps Product Features

Safety

The Z features a sample detection system that yields the safety of Class 1 conditions. If there’s no sample present, the laser will not fire a single pulse, meaning no stray laser light fired into empty space. If a sample is removed during testing, the laser immediately stops firing once the sample is ¼” or more away from the window. Because the Z will not fire into empty space, it may be operated under Class 1 conditions, with proper training (ANSI Z136.1). Thus the Z provides the analytical advantages of a 3b laser in a device that may be operated in Class 1 conditions. This safety benefit is ONLY achievable with a milli-joule, low rep-rate laser. High rep rate class 3b lasers, like those featured in other LIBS devices, cannot operate with this safety mode.

Display

The new Z features a large display with 3X the brightness of the previous version. It’s easy to read in any lighting condition including direct sunlight.

The Z is well-balanced, with a specially designed ergonomic grip

Ergonomics

The new Z is exceptionally well-balanced, with a specially designed ergonomic grip that offers all-day testing without operator fatigue.

Spectrometer

The Z-300 uses a patented stack-spectrometer design and includes an additional spectrometer compared to the Z-200. Its unique design offers both high resolution wide wavelength range – superior to any other handheld LIBS. The Z-300 wavelength range is 190 nm – 950 nm. In addition to the elements measured by the Z-200, this wider wavelength range also measures: H, F, Br, Cl, N, O, S, Rb, Ce and K.

Laser

The key to good LIBS analysis is creating a good plasma. The best plasma’s come from the highest power densities on the sample. The Z’s PULSAR laser technology fires laser pulses in the 5-6 mJ/pulse range, at up to 50 Hz frequencies, with 1 ns wide pulses. It is well established that mJoule, rather than micro-joule laser pulses yield superior analytical results.

No Fragile X-Ray Detectors

Unlike XRF analyzers, there’s no sensitive detector element near the front window. The Z uses a virtually impenetrable “tough as Pyrex” quartz window. Because LIBZ collects light in the visible and ultraviolet spectral region, rather than x-ray region, a durable, thick window may be used so long as it’s transparent to visible and UV light. Light traverses this quartz window, then into a well-protected spectrometer. You will not be able to break this detector window!

Camera/Video

The SciAps Z combines its high resolution camera and video capability with powerful Android features that enable photos or videos of test locations or samples to be taken and stored with results. This ability augments the power of LIBS analysis. The laser is automatically focused to < 50 µm beam size, without requiring any external, intensity-killing collimation commonly found with XRF. The Z’s camera can be used to precisely strike many types of samples. Welds can be analyzed in multiple locations when examining weld chemistry changes across the weld. The Z’s camera can hone in on particular regions for non-homogenous samples. Images are automatically saved with results for photo-documentation. And, the Android platform enables sharing of the data and high resolution images when collaborating with colleagues or reporting results.

Data Sharing & Connectivity

The Z is built on Google’s Android Platform to defy obsolescence and provide easy, intuitive operation. Android offers instant compatibility and connectivity to smartphones, tablets and other devices and avoids the tedious process of downloading and importing data – including the Android SHARE feature. The powerful processor offers Wireless, Bluetooth communications and is GPS enabled.

Battery

The newly designed Z uses much less power, and lasts 6+ hours on a single, lightweight battery. Plug in the AC adapter to recharge and power the analyzer. External battery charger and spare battery included

Auto Calibration

The Z monitors time and internal temperature, and automatically institutes a calibration as needed. This means no cal-check samples to carry around (and lose or get dirty). Reduces the likelihood of operator error by automating the calibration procedure.

SciAps Z – Top 10 Advantages

  • The ONLY LIBS that offers Dual-Burn Operation

The Z features on-board argon purge for high precision analysis. Users may also run the Z in air-burn if your testing requires less precision or you have restrictions on gas canisters. 50 years of spark optical emission have proven the analytical superiority of argon purge!

  • Protect your Confidential Materials Chemistry

The Z includes desktop/tablet software allowing a user (password protected) to modify calibrations, elements analyzed, grade IDs and various spectral pre-processing. Customers can keep their proprietary materials proprietary!

  • Lightest, Fastest LIBS Analyzer

The latest Z is the lightest, fastest high performance LIBS analyzer. Perfectly balanced, you can test fatigue-free all day long. Wrist strap also included. Results shown in 1 second, full test time 3 sec.

  • No Grinding, except for Carbon

The Z uses a 50 Hz laser, firing 10 surface cleaning shots in 0.2 seconds to burn away surface contaminants, dirt, etc. The Z is the only LIBS unit proven to analyze even the dirtiest scrap without grinding.

  • Beam Rastering

The Z rasters the laser to 6 different positions and automatically averages the results. Why do this? Because LIBS lasers are typically 50 um in diameter, and testing a single location may not average out inhomogeneities even in vacuum melt alloys. Also if the laser happens to hit an inclusion or embedded contaminant, an outlying result will be averaged out over the rastering. 50 years of LIBS scientific literature tell you that rastering is a “must have.”

  • Free Software Upgrades

Software upgrades free for the life of the analyzer.

  • Customer Flexibility

Do you have specific UI or SW requests? Tell us about them. Most requests are requested by multiple customers, and we’ll always do our best to include them in a future software update.

  • On-board Camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS

Photo-document samples, and/or aim laser at specific area on sample if needed. WiFi/BT make for easy data transfer and connectivity. USB connections also included.

  • Vibrant Display

Brightest, largest display, easiest to read in direct sunlight.

  • Service Costs

Generally the lowest in the industry. Why? We design our products for rough use and low lifetime service costs. SciAps makes our own lasers and spectrometers, so we can repair items on a component-level.

Now with improved heat dissipation, reduced weight, and new user-interface.

Discover the wide range of available applications and standard element packages for every major industry.

SciAps Premium XRF Analyzers

The X-550 sets a new performance standard for handheld XRF. Weighing 2.8 lbs. (1.3 kg) with the battery, it’s the smallest, lightest, fastest XRF analyzer on the market. It’s fast on all alloys and as good on aluminums as it is on high temps for the scrap market, and it comes with fully loaded apps for NDT (Residuals, Sulfidic Corrosion, Alloy).

The X-550 uses the industry’s most powerful X-ray tube, operating up to 3x the power in the Beam 2 setting compared to the SciAps X-505 and any other handheld XRF analyzers. The unique geometry and tube power optimize performance for low atomic number measurement applications including sulfidic corrosion (low Si), phosphorus and sulfur, and aluminum alloys, as well as for residuals analysis per API 751 and 5L specifications.

What’s the difference between the premium X-550 and X-505? The answer is simple: Speed on low atomic number elements such as Mg, Al, Si, P and S. When the X-550 runs at about 3x the X-ray power in the “Beam 2” setting (also known as the low voltage setting) compared to the X-505 or other handheld XRF analyzers, the measured intensities from Mg, Al, Si, P and S (plus K, Ca and Cl in other apps) are 3x higher, producing 3x faster measurements with the X-550.

The X-550 and X-505 also come with A-list accessibility. They offer the narrowest form factor for reaching even the most difficult testing locations.
